There’s no doubt about young gun Cotter as he makes a bold return
FEBRUARY 27, 2019

THERE may have been doubters, but Cowboys young-gun Reuben Cotter never lost faith in his ability to make a return to the game.

After losing the majority of the last three years of his young career following two serious knee injuries, Cotter made his long-awaited comeback in the Cowboys’ trial against the Titans last weekend.

While he’s not named in the side to take on the Storm in his hometown of Mackay on Saturday, Cotter said he was still on cloud nine, with the power of positivity helping to vindicate his re-emergence.

“It’s definitely been a long road to recovery, but I tried not to sort of think the negative … it’s not helpful for yourself or your team so the positive thinking is the way to go, I think,” Cotter said.

“There were definitely highs and lows, but I had a good support network, a good family, and a good partner who was there for a lot of the three years, and a lot of support here at the club.

“After my first game back, I’m still on a bit of a high; I don’t think it’s really set in yet, but I’m really looking forward to the year ahead.”

What that year holds for Cotter is yet to be known, as he waits in the wings behind established hooker Jake Granville.

Prepared to bide his time in the Intrust Super Cup with the Mackay Cutters, Cotter said he would continue to rebuild his game ahead of a hopeful debut at some point in 2019.

“I’d just love to get a debut, but the most important thing right now is trying to get my match fitness back, and all of the little parts of my game back that’s required to debut,” he said.

“I haven’t played in three years, so it’d be good to get back to playing consistent footy … but if Greeny (Cowboys coach Paul Green) decides I deserve a debut, I’ll grab it with both hands.”

A former Cutter, Cotter along with the likes of Mitch Dunn will be assigned to the club when not required for NRL duties.

Looking forward to playing a role with his hometown club, the 20-year-old was hopeful of lining up for the Cutters in this Saturday’s curtain-raiser against the Townsville Blackhawks.

“I’ll probably get a run with the Cutters, so it’ll be good to get back and see some of those boys I played footy with,” Cotter said.

“I’d like to have a role there (in the coming season), and if I’m eligible for a role I’d be happy to take it.

“It’d be good to go back throughout the season and spend some time with the Cutters boys and form some bonds for the season. I’m looking forward to it and can’t wait.”

Well there isn't really much sense in him playing the trial if he's not going to be there for 6 or 10 weeks. Might as well give the spot to someone in contention for a position in round 1.

Scott Bolton's penalty seems ridiculous. Cowboys should appeal.

No consistency. Where is GI's presentation tour? Take the 10 weeks. He'd be mentally broken anyway from visiting 15 other clubs.

Will fall on deaf ears by the sounds. Just read an article that there was a heated meeting between Lancini and Greenberg and Lancini got nowhere.

It's just absurd. Sometimes I wish I didn't love the Cowboys so much or I'd be done with this circus.

I can imagine poor Bolts getting laughed out of some clubs. Eg;

"Pffffft. Mate that's not how you assault someone!!! Let's go for a beer.....we'll show you how"

He'll get sledged on the field no doubt. I guess Bolts won't have to wait too long for the NRL's inevitable crackdown on sledging though.

Bolts was a sleaze and did the wrong thing. But if it were you or I in his shoes, at worst we get thrown out of the bar and told to move on. No way does it ever go to court.

He’s copped a harsher punishment than what cronulla received for taking performance enhancing drugs. Sometimes I genuinely believe the NRL is run by monkeys.

Bolton has been banned for 5 games.

The Cowboys prop's suspension would have lasted 10 games and included a five per cent fine of his salary. However, that was halved after he agreed to educate all other clubs at the NRL's Magic Round in May.

That makes it sound less sensational than the Newscorp papers were making it out to be, as if he would have to tour around the country showing the video 15 times.

It's seems the 'visit to all clubs' will actually him address the leadership groups of all the team's during magic round in BNE.

A "try not to be a f'wit on the piss" seminar if you will. I don't mind it honestly, it's something different and what's been done to date isn't working as well as it should. Times are changing, punishments are changing as a result, I don't see the point in comparing punishments to those handed out previously

"Bolton, who plead guilty to the common assault of a woman in Bondi last year, has been slapped with a 10-week suspension and a fine totalling five per cent of his salary. However, the penalty will be halved if Bolton agrees to address the captains and senior players of all other teams during this year’s Magic Round in Brisbane in May."

Definitely seems like less of a humiliation tour than originally made out. Makes more sense and seems more fair.

"A set of agreed facts state that Bolton was intoxicated as he slumped next to her on a sofa and when she stood up to get away from him he touched her on the upper thigh".
