North Queensland reigns

Rival No 7s Scott Prince and Johnathan Thurston square off during a
disagreement in tonight's rugby league match on the Gold Coast. The
Cowboys beat the Titans 24-10.

COWBOYS coach Graham Murray has put NSW on red alert for a Johnathan Thurston-Matt Bowen blitzkrieg in the State of Origin series based on the pair's contribution to North Queensland's 24-10 win over the Gold Coast Titans at Carrara last night.

Murray, the NSW coach, admitted it would be hard to counter Thurston and Bowen given their performances in the wet last night with the Queensland Origin selection panel watching from the stands.

The Queensland and NSW sides will be chosen next Tuesday for the opening match of the series at Suncorp Stadium on May 23 and Bowen's form makes it almost impossible for the Maroons selectors not to find a place for him, at the very least on the bench.

Thurston reaffirmed his status as the No. 1 halfback in the game with a convincing points decision over Titans rival Scott Prince while Queensland enforcer Carl Webb made a successful return from a broken jaw.

Asked about the prospect of having to counter Thurston in the Origin arena, Murray replied: "I haven't thought too much about that but he's an exceptional talent.

"I don't know if they're going to find a spot for Bowen but NSW are going to have to be good to combat them. Johnathan was the best halfback on the field tonight. "Scott was probably the form halfback so far this year but if you go on a points decision tonight I think Thurston gets it."

The win also gave the Cowboys bragging rights as Queensland's best side after they beat the Broncos in round 1 and the Titans beat Brisbane in round 5.

The win moves the Cowboys into clear third spot on 12 points while the Titans are in a log jam of teams on eight points.

Cowboys lock Justin Smith (lower leg) and five-eighth Jason Smith (ankle) were Cowboys casualties and both players are in doubt for Sunday's away match against the Roosters.

Jason Smith was at the centre of a sledging battle in the first half involving Prince and Cowboys forward Sione Faumuina with Faumuina gesticulating towards Prince as a scrum was set.

"They were just verballing each other and Sione was sticking up for Jason," Murray said.

Former Queensland and Test star Smith said he was in awe of Thurston and still learned things from him at training.

"The thing about Johnathan is he doesn't stand out wide. He defends in the middle and leads by example," Smith said.

"Not many halfbacks do that."

Yes (and that's a Saturday night game) but ... the Titans play the Roosters in Syndey this Sunday.

It looks like in their rush to get the story into the paper they got the teams mixed up :p
