A reminder of the new squad rules:

"Under the 2017 contracting model, clubs had 25 players to choose from plus an additional 2nd tier salary cap. In the past if clubs needed to use more than this they made application to use additional players.

From 2018, clubs have an additional 5 players (30) to choose but no 2nd tier. Clubs can then make application to use more than 30 players from the development list (up to 6 players) and then players from the 2nd tier competitions (ISP in NSW and ISC in QLD) if they still can't field a team in position from the 30 + 6 Development List players."

Our rumoured/unofficial (?), development list is: Carlin Anderson, Jake Clifford, Mitch Dunn, Shaun Hudson and Emry Pere.

That means we have 29/30 players currently in the NRL squad and 5/6 on the development list.

2018 Off Contract
Javid Bowen-experts say make or break year-might leave if doesnt succeed with us
Josh Chudleigh-may have to show some form before midseason to be resigned-same scen as Moga...i hope JC starts well
Lachlan Coote-thought he was signed longer...needs to perform as he is on decent money and club could shop for new fb with that money

Not really anyone on the market besides Dylan Edwards.

I reckon he could leave if another club offers him a starting spot.

Biggest player on the chopping block is O'neil

The last spot in the top 30 should go to another specialist hooker in my opinion. Would love to see the club give an opportunity to Puara from the Hunters. There has also been talk that Baptiste is going to be forced out of the Raiders. Either would suffice, whoever gets the spot doesn't need to be a superstar, so long as they could offer some upside in the starting role if Granville got injured.

We have Chudleigh and Hampton as back up 9’s, I dont know if we can fit a 4th hooker in our cap. We need more front rowers.

Agreed, hooker is not a position we need more of. Would of loved to get Leary but he is headed south.

Cowboys star Michael Morgan open to joining a Sydney club — but would rather stay in Townsville

HE spent the weekend in Cronulla with good mate Valentine Holmes and liked the view of Manly as the Kangaroos set up camp on Monday.

Now Michael Morgan says he will not rule out a permanent move to Sydney as his contract talks ramp up immediately following the World Cup.

With James Maloney, Matt Moylan and Mitchell Pearce all part of the current playmaker merry-go-round, Morgan will push close to $1 million-a-season once his own deal expires at the end of next season.

Free to negotiate with rival clubs, Morgan, 25, is keen to remain with North Queensland who have already tabled a deal understood to be worth around $3.2 million over four years to become Johnathan Thurston’s halfback successor.

But Morgan, the hottest property to come on to the open market — along with Roosters skipper Boyd Cordner — is happy to test his market value, including Sydney where no shortage of clubs will clear the decks for the Queensland and Kangaroos star.

“You don’t want to rule out (Sydney) because the way the game is these days, anything can happen,’’ Morgan said.

“If I was to say I will never play for another club and then a couple of years later I am at another club, it makes me look silly.

“My preference would be up there in Townsville because I am up there, my family is from up there, my partner and her family are from there.

“You see guys who have been at one club for a long time have to change. At the moment I am confident I will be able to stay there.

“I remember one of the big reasons I re-signed last time was I wanted to win a comp. I re-signed at the start of 2015. It so happened to be that we did it that year.

“The lifestyle in Townsville is a lot cheaper than down here. I like Townsville and I like the club, so it’s not like I am looking to leave.

“But you always want to see what is out there and what could be an opportunity. I haven’t done that before.

“It wouldn’t hurt to see. Not looking at it I guess would be more of a problem than not having a look.’’

Morgan helped guide the Cowboys to an unlikely grand final this year, especially once Thurston went down and the Cowboys needed to rely on St George Illawarra losing in the final round.

It proved Morgan was capable of controlling a team without Thurston, something he said he was not entirely sure he could do before the season-ending shoulder injury to his future Immortal teammate.

Cowboys general manager of football Peter Parr said now the collective bargaining agreement had been thrashed out, they were keen to move on Morgan once his World Cup commitments were finished.

“Our desire is to keep him at the club, and I’m confident that will happen,’’ Parr said.

Morgan has played in the Kangaroos’ opening two Cup wins but could be rested for Saturday’s clash against Lebanon at Allianz Stadium.

James Maloney was spotted back around the camp on Monday where he went for a quick walk with new Panthers teammate Josh Mansour, while Cooper Cronk — who will call Allianz Stadium home for the next two years — was spotted being dropped off by partner Tara Rushton.

As he said, he's testing the market to see how much he is worth to other clubs, but I think if the club can somewhat match his value he will stay.

He'd be stupid to say he's staying here no matter what. Scott did the same thing in his negotiations. All about that bargaining power.

Corey Parker was complaining in his book how he always got paid peanuts by the Broncos until the very end despite being a QLD and Australia rep. The club obviously knew he was never serious about leaving and took him for a ride (Parker used to negotiate his own contracts as well). Actually I found it pretty funny in the end as Parker did not come across as a likeable guy in his book.

I don't mind Morgo backing himself to get a good deal. He is way too humble for his own good at times, so it shows he has gradually got more confident in his abilities.

With that said, please stay!!! lol
