Towers youngster grabs Guns wing spot
By ADAM GARDINI

01apr06

CHARTERS Towers teenager Cameron Heading will reach his season goal earlier than expected when he makes his Queensland Cup debut for the North Queensland Young Guns tomorrow.

Heading had set his sights set on playing for the Young Guns this year and gets his wish just four rounds into the season after being promoted on to the wing for tomorrow's clash against Tweed Heads at the Piggabeen Complex.

The 17-year-old, who moved from Charters Towers at the start of last year to finish Year 12 at Kirwan High School, is the new face in a reshuffled Young Guns backline following the elevation of centre Josh Hannay into the Cowboys line-up.

The Queensland junior representative worked under Young Guns coach Mick Crawley previously when chosen in Queensland Academy of Sport and Australian Institute of Sport rugby league programs.

Crawley said the nuggetty winger, who he believes will develop into a strong utility back given his ability to also play in the halves, was ready to take the step up into the Queensland Cup.

"He's been a scholarship holder with the Cowboys since he was 15," Crawley said of Heading, who his in the first year of a two-year contract with the Cowboys.

"He's been training with us right through pre-season but he had a shoulder injury in the trials and didn't play.

"It's a good opportunity for him. We're not trying to rush him in but we thought on his form he was ready for a chance."

Heading's promotion on to the wing is one of several changes to the Young Guns side which maintained its 16-match unbeaten streak last weekend with a 36-16 win over Norths.

Forwards Robert Tanielu (suspension), Rod Jensen (NRL) and Gavin Cooper (NRL) are all unavailable while captain Daniel Strickland has again been ruled out with a niggling calf injury.

Crawley said the respective workrates of Tanielu and Jensen left a gaping hole to fill and said he had addressed the team about stepping up in their absence.

"Last week Rob Tanielu made 28 hit-ups and Jensen 38 tackles so between those two blokes there's a fair workload to pick up," Crawley said.

In a late boost, hooker Clint Amos is likely to join the team after not being required for the Cowboys in Sydney last night.

Tweed Heads suffered the biggest loss of the round last weekend when conceding seven tries in a 36-6 loss to former cellar-dwellers Souths Logan.

However, Crawley said he was wary of travelling to take on the Seagulls, who beat Wynnum in the opening round and then led Toowoomba by 20 points before surrendering in round two.

"With Souths Logan, going by how they played against us (two weeks ago) and Norths, they were due for a win," he said.

"Tweed are never easy especially at home and we're a bit understrength."

YOUNG GUNS: Jason Barsley, Brenton Bowen, Dean Payne, Mark Henry, Cameron Heading, Russell Aitken, Brent McConnell, Sam Faust, Clint Amos, Ray Cashmere, Mark Dalle Cort, Jimmy Andersen, Shane Muspratt . Interchange: Scott Bolton, Leigh Coghill, Scott Smith, Dean Limpus.

That Cameron Heading bloke sold me some tickets a few weeks ago. Seemed like a nice bloke. Good on him for getting a run.

If he is 17 and from Charters Towers he would have played in my junior league comp. He must be 18 this year because I can't remember him or his name in rep sides.

Dean Payne hasn't been too good lately hopefully he will improve.

Also somebody was talking about that Charles Vis. I tell you what he is everywhere. I see him all the time whenever I go to Townsville.

Cameron has always been picked in the Townsville and NQ rep sides while playing with the Towers. Yes he is 18 this year, he played in the same age group as Brady Payne. He played centre.
He went to Kirwan High for the last two years but still played for the Towers on the Friday nights.

Ouch.

Not what you'd expect when you are playing for the record of most consecutive wins.

I guess the boys are missing a number of regulars through stepping up to the Cowboys or injury.

They'll be back.

Tweed Stops Gun Train In Its Tracks

TWEED Heads has taken advantage of an unsettled North Queensland team, halting the Gun train in its tracks with a 54-16 shellacking and ending a record run of 18 unbeaten games.

NRL call-ups, injury and suspension had Young Guns coach Mick Crawley chopping and changing through the week and it showed as the disjointed champions met a resilient Tweed outfit.

The Seagulls led just 22-12 at halftime, but piled on the points in an awesome second half display, throwing out the form guide after consecutive losses to Toowoomba and Souths Logan.

Although still without long-term casualties Andrew Moroney and Chris Enahoro, the underdogs also erased memories of a heartbreaking 34-30 loss to the Young Guns last year which effectively ended their finals hopes.

“Without stealing anyone’s thunder we’re a bit like the Wests Tigers were in the middle of last season – an absolute tipster’s nightmare,” admitted coach Steve Murphy.

“You never know which team’s going to show up. We’ve shown in three seasons we can beat anyone in this comp, but for one reason or another we lack that consistency.

“Saying that, how amazing is this game that on any given day anyone in the competition can get you? Last week I couldn’t sleep and now this week I’m on top of the world.”

North Queensland went into the game without skipper Daniel Strickland (calf injury), Rod Jensen (NRL), Gavin Cooper (NRL) and Rob Tanielu (suspended).

Yet their replacements were hardly dills, with Clint Amos coming back into the side and Dean Limpus and Jimmy Andersen experienced enough at Wizard Cup to handle the task.

The only player with any excuse was Cameron Heading, a 17-year-old from Charters Towers thrust into his debut in one of the club’s biggest-ever losses.

Indeed the 54 points conceded equaled a record from 2004 when the Young Guns lost 54-26 against Norths and finished two points outside the top five.

The result means that North Queensland will share the record of most consecutive wins - 16 - with the Burleigh team of 1998-99. However the 18 straight games unbeaten (includes one draw) is a record in its own right.

Tweed Heads winger Nat Barnes capped off a memorable fortnight with a hat-trick out wide, moving to outright leading try-scorer in the Wizard Cup with seven this season. Last week Barnes became just the fourth Tweed player to register 50 Cup games for the club.

The Seagulls have now jumped to fifth on the ladder, while North Queensland drops back behind Redcliffe to second on for-and-against.

TWEED HEADS 54 (Nat Barnes 3, Jay McDermott 2, Matt Pow, Dean Allen, Tom Prichard, Josh Vaughan, Ryan Milligan tries; Brad Davis 7 goals) beat NORTH QLD 16 (Jason Barsley, Mark Henry, Russell Aitken tries; Brenton Bowen 2 goals).
