PRIZED grand final jumpers were distributed and willingly accepted by the North Queensland Young Guns last night as the build-up to Saturday's Queensland Cup showdown against Burleigh continued.
Cowboys stalwart Peter Jones and Thuringowa Mayor Les Tyrell presented jumpers to the 17 players who will take the field for the Young Guns in the North Queensland club's historic first grand final appearance.
About 100 guests, including players, partners, sponsors and media attended a dinner at Dairy Farmers Stadium to recognise the achievement of the Young Guns, who head into the grand final on the back of a club record 12-match winning streak and 14-game unbeaten run.
Jones, a member of the Cowboys' inaugural team, held the record for the most number of games at the club (131) until that record was passed by Paul Bowman last season and Tyrell was part of the Cowboys' home-stay program for youngsters in 1995.
"I think (the fact) they are the first Cowboys side to ever make it to a grand final in any competition is a pretty significant thing," Jones said.
"They'll go down in history and that's a big achievement."
Jones said Saturday's grand final appearance was a step towards the future for the club.
"We've got some pretty special young men coming through that we think have got pretty good futures at this club," Jones said.
"We hope they can come away with a win and learn from the experience."
