Manase Manuokafoa

IT'S hard to keep your mind on football when your child is fighting for his life.

Cowboy Manase Manuokafoa's world was rocked in 2009 by one phone call telling him his 11-year-old son was hospitalised in Sydney with meningitis.

For 11 days he stayed by Micah's bedside before he was given the all clear.

It cost the dedicated family man two games in the Queensland Cup and his spot in first grade, but even when he eventually forced his back into the side the nightmare wasn't over.

''It was a bit scary, the young one had the serious illness and every time he had a headache or a migraine we were on our toes,'' Manuokafoa said as he prepares for Saturday night's clash against the Gold Coast in Darwin in torrential rain and thunderstorms.

''We would want to rush him to the doctors to see what was going on, whether it had come up again, reoccurred.

''He's fully recovered now and loving school, he's just started high school.

''There have been no hiccups so hopefully nothing happens this season.''

The fresh mindset is telling, with the fully-fit prop/second-rower sporting a broad smile at training and at public appearances.

A fractured metacarpal bone in his hand meant he was forced to sit out last weekend's trials in Cairns, but so good has his pre-season form been that he was rushed into this week's squad.

''It's all come good, I had a week off, it's been two weeks now and it's recovered,'' Manuokafoa said.

''I'm looking forward to playing the Gold Coast now, we've got our last trial to shine and try to cement a spot to play the Broncos in round one.''

The last chance to shine is all important for everyone in the Cowboys pack, with no injuries and the addition of Willie Mason meaning competition is the hottest it has been in years at the start of the season.

''All the boys are raring to go, all the forwards, there are no injuries,'' Manuokafoa said.

''We all had a good pre-season, it was one of the toughest pre-season I've ever had in my career and I'm better for it.

''There's a lot of competition for spots which is a good thing for the club.

''It keeps us on our toes and makes sure we're playing good footy.

''You've got to be playing to the best of your ability every week come the start of the season.''

Packing down at a whopping 113kg and standing at an intimidating 195cm, Manuokafoa is a threat whether he plays front or second row - and he doesn't mind where he plays this year as long as he gets a start.

''I've got to play as many spots as I can, in the middle, on the edge, it gives you more of a chance to be in the side to cover for spots when they are injuries,'' he said.

''I'm not really worried, I don't mind playing in the back row, front row, any position as long as I am in.''

He added that Mason had been a steadying influence on the young forwards at the club.

''Big 'Mase', he's good for the club,'' Manuokafoa said.

''He's good around the young boys and myself, he's a role model. He hasn't missed any training, he doesn't take any shortcuts so we lead off him.''

Cowboys training was again hindered by rain yesterday, with a deluge smashing the players as they ran through their paces yesterday afternoon.
