I think you could knock of a few NRL sides with the strength of that Young Guns side.

I was quite impressed with Mark Henry at full back on the weekend.

Big bad Sam Faust: Front rower. He goes back to the dark old days. We lost him straight out of Kirwin to St George in O2- Back in the days when nobody wanted to play for the Cowboys. Remember them?

He's been knocking about down in Premier League in a team with few opportunities for a young frontrower, so I guess he's come home to be part of the glory years....lets hope they are anyway!

I bet both he and Tanielu (who also knocked us back) wonder sometimes where they might be now if they had stuck with us!

Sam is from Proserpine he played in the 2002 Kirwan High School team who played Wavell High at Dairy Farmers in the Qld Final of the Nutri Grain Cup.
Some of the players in that Kirwan side were, Drew Donovan, Simon Boyes, Phillip Dennis, Steven Goodhew, Sam Thaiday, Colin Wilkie, Dean Payne and Jacob Lillyman.
I'm sure Sam's younger Brother Chris has a Cowboys Scholarship.

North QLD v Souths Logan Preview

NORTH QLD v SOUTHS LOGAN

Dairy Farmers Stadium, Saturday March 18, 6.30pm.

THE STORY: The last remaining player from the first ever Queensland Wizard Cup game– Ron Troutman – finally reaches 100 competition matches this weekend. Troutman kicked the winning goal when Wynnum beat Mackay 20-18 on March 30, 1996 in the 4pm match. He has been selected at halfback for Souths Logan this week.

Faust ready for a hell of a game for Young Guns
By Adam Gardini - Townsville Bulletin

Former Kirwan High School student Sam Faust is looking forward to what will mark somewhat of a homecoming at Dairy Farmers Stadium tonight.
Faust is one of several NQ players who will make their debuts for the Young Guns in tonight's Qld Cup clash against Souths Logan Magpies.
For the 21 year-old forward, who will debut off the interchange bench, it's an occasion that could have quite possibly come earlier had he not signed with St George Illawarra upon completion of year 12 at Kirwan.
Now, after several years away from his native NQ, the Proserpine junior is eager to make the most of his opportunity with the Young Guns.
"I had a scholarship at the Cowboys and just wanted to go to see Sydney," Faust recalled of his signing with the Dragons in 2002.
"I went to St George and played Jersey Flegg for a couple of years and played Premier League last year.
"It was good I got a chance to come home. As soon as I found out there was an opportunity here I jumped at it."
Faust replaces injured Young Guns skipper Daniel Strickland (calf).
Also making their debuts for the Young Guns are a more recent Kirwan High School product in Brady Payne, the younger hooker of Cowboys hooker Aaron, and former Souths Logan hooker Scott Smith.
Smith has been promoted into the starting line-up at hooker in place of Clint Amos (Cowboys) and Payne a halfback/hooker, will come off the bench.
While Souths Logan have never beaten the Cowboys' feeder side, Young Guns coach Mick Crawley said he was wary of a new-look Magpies outfit after the club's heavy off-season recruitment drive.
Twelve of Souths Logan's 17-man squad for tonight's clash are new to the club.

Magpies Looming As Threat

FOR the second week in a row Souths Logan has had its fingers snapped shut in the cookie jar, with the Magpies all but stealing a surprise victory over one of the Queensland Wizard Cup’s leading teams.

Seven days after pushing the Norths Devils to the brink, the Brandon Park mob backed up with 44-32 loss to reigning premier North Queensland in Townsville.

Both the Devils and Young Guns boast direct NRL affiliations, while the Magpies have a side consisting mainly of past juniors, country recruits and cast-offs from other Wizard Cup clubs.

Of course there are exceptions to the rule, one being Brandon Costin, at the fore as the Magpies inconceivably led 32-26 at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

It was only in the dying stages on Saturday that Mark Gliddon’s men were overtaken by the Guns, a team featuring State of Origin stars Carl Webb and Josh Hannay.

“I thought Souths Logan played pretty well and that Costin gave them a lot of direction in particular,” relieved Young Guns coach Mick Crawley said.

“They backed up what they did against Norths and I think if they keep a similar side through the year they’ll trouble a lot of clubs.”

The difference in standing between the Magpies and Young Guns is best exhibited by the plight of Scott Smith, arguably Souths Logan’s best player in 2005.

Having been recruited by North Queensland in the off-season, Smith missed the cut for their team completely in Round One, but was included for the second round encounter.

The Young Guns were disrupted by a number of changes, with Sam Faust, Leigh Coghill and Brady Payne receiving their first fixture appearances as a consequence.

Hoping for a return to the NRL, blockbusting Webb was voted Players’ Player, with five of North Queensland’s eight tries scored by players over 100kg.

Former Easts and Redcliffe player Coghill earned a double, as did Rod Jensen, a player pivotal to the Cowboys in last year’s finals charge.

Round Three sees Souths Logan host Tweed Heads at Brandon Park on Saturday. North Queensland is at home to the Norths Devils at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday evening.

NORTH QUEENSLAND 44 (Rod Jensen 2, Lee Coghill 2, Brent McConnell, Carl Webb, Mark Dalle Cort, Ray Cashmere tries; Josh Hannay 6 goals) beat SOUTHS LOGAN 32 (Scott Marks 2, Quentin Laulu-Togagae, Matt Templeman, Stanley Fau tries; Brandon Costin 6 goals).

Coghill impressive for Guns

By ADAM GARDINI
20mar06

LESSER-known off-season recruit Leigh Coghill showed he's out to make some noise in his first season for the North Queensland Young Guns after his match-winning debut on Saturday night.

In an eight-minute blitz, the interchange forward scored two tries and then instigated the movement which put the result beyond doubt in the Young Guns' 44-32 win over a vastly improved Souths-Logan outfit at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

The efforts of the former Easts Tigers forward helped the Young Guns turn around a six-point deficit with less than 10 minutes remaining into an unlikely 12-point victory against the perennial cellar-dwellers of the Queensland Cup.

Coghill was left out of the Young Guns' 17-man squad which defeated Toowoomba in last week's opening-round clash and was only a late inclusion on Saturday night following the promotion of Gavin Cooper to the Cowboys squad.

Young Guns coach Mick Crawley said Coghill had been unlucky not to have received an opportunity last weekend given his form during the pre-season and the fact he finished third in last year's Queensland Cup player of the year standings.

"Leigh was nice and enthusiastic and he's been unlucky not to get a go until now," Crawley said. "The big difference was a few of the guys that did get their opportunities like Coghill, Sam Faust and Brady Payne, you could see by their enthusiasm, they wanted to be a part of the side and they lifted everyone."

The Young Guns had trailed a new-look Souths-Logan side - led by former Canberra Raider Brandon Costin - by as much as 16 points during the first half and Crawley said his side had been out-enthused for much of the match.

"I suppose more than anything it was a bit of a wake-up call for us," he said.

"We might have thought being at home this week with the side we had in, we could just turn up and everything could fall into place for us."
