Bright prospect ... Albany Creek Crushers junior star
Anthony Gadd is off to Townsville.

HARD-hitting Albany Creek Crushers prodigy Anthony Gadd heads to Townsville this week for his first assignment as a signed North Queensland Cowboys development player.

The Pine Rivers State High School student has inked a two-year contract with the NRL club after making the Queensland Maroons under-16 and SEQ Poinsettias teams this year.

It is a significant move for the strongly built 16-year-old, who at 195cm has the potential to be a damaging second rower at first grade level, just as he has been in a string of junior premierships for the Crushers.

``I’ve still got a long way to go,’’ the quietly spoken North Lakes resident said of his opportunity with the Cowboys.

Originally from Cherbourg, which produced current NRL stars Chris Sandow and Willie Tonga, Gadd has plenty of strong sporting heritage.

His cousin is new Queensland Reds recruit and former Melbourne Storm centre Will Chambers, his uncles Glenn and Keith Gadd both made Australian and Queensland Indigenous sides, and his mother May-Leah is a former Wide Bay long jump and high jump champion.

And Keith Gadd’s son, Keith junior, was named on the wing for the Queensland under-14 merit team this year.

Anthony identifies heavily with his indigenous culture, and was honoured this year with a Queensland Murri under-16 representative jersey.

He played alongside another Pine Rivers SHS product, Jerome Leedy, in front of a bumper Suncorp Stadium crowd before the Australia-New Zealand Anzac Test match in May.

``It was a big thing for me, playing for your people and your state,’’ Anthony said.

``Some of the indigenous boys in the Australian side, Justin Hodges and Jonathan Thurston, came and spoke to us before the match and just said do yourselves and your people proud.’’

16 years old & 195cm tall, what have they been feeding him? Those poor kids he's been playing against at junior level.
