TODD Carney will be back in a Roosters jersey at Atherton in February.
But the former league bad boy has not been dumped back to bush footy, he will merely be fulfilling a promise to maintain links with the Atherton Roosters after they gave him a lifeline earlier this year.
Carney will headline a young Sydney Roosters outfit at Atherton’s NQ Hardware Stadium on February 13, the team likely to play a Cowboys under-20 combination after the Northern Pride was initially sounded out about the pre-season match.
Carney will captain the Sydney Roosters, although details will not be set in stone until the end of the month when Atherton officials are likely to meet about the clash.
Deregistered by the NRL in 2008, Carney spent the 2009 season in the Cairns District Rugby League,
living and working at the Barron Valley Hotel while playing in the halves for the Atherton Roosters.
He promised on leaving he would do what he could to help the Atherton after being thrown a lifeline by the club.
"I’ll do the best I can to get some players up here so (Atherton) can be a force again next year and I’ve got no doubt they will be," Carney said after September’s CDRL grand final loss to Brothers.
"I’ve actually spoken to a development bloke at the Roosters in Sydney to see if he’s got any players and I’ve also been in contact with my manager to try to get a couple of older blokes up here that have finished (their careers)."
The Roosters-Cowboys clash would continue a run of high-profile pre-season games for the Atherton club.
The Roosters hosted the Northern Pride in a clash against the Cowboys under-20s in February this year and in the past has lured former Cowboys state league side the Young Guns to the Tableland.
The match sets up a big month for league lovers in the Far North, with the Cowboys’ NRL trial against the Warriors being held at Barlow Park on February 20.
