How the Cowboys Rated
Round 1 v Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium, 12-03-06
From the Townsville Bulletin

1. Matt Bowen - 8.5
Dangerous every time he touched the ball in a heavily involved display and also kicked intelligently in general play.

2. Neil Sweeney - 7
Solid as a rock on the left wing. Scored a try and was sent flying down the sideline on several other occasions.

3. Ty Williams - 7
Kept Broncos centre Shaun Berrigan quiet with some strong defence and went close to scoring a miraculous try off a Bowen cross kick.

4. Paul Bowman - 7
Produced a trademark display in defence and als chimed into the backline with some elusive running.

5. Matt Sing - 7
Was hungry for work all day in an involved performance highlighted by the fact he scored a try on the opposite side of the field to his wing.

6. Johnathan Thurston - 8.5
Scored three tries, kicked six goals, steered the ship well and was always trailing in support in a brilliant individual display.

7. Brett Firman - 7
Set up the opening try for Sing and provided great service for the likes of Thurston and Bowen in another step up from his encouraging pre-season form.

8. Mitchell Sargent - 8.5
Did the hard yards up front in the early stages to give the Cowboys' little men plenty of time and room to move around the middle of the ruck.

9. Aaron Payne - 9
Carved The Broncos up in the centre of the field in the opening half, setting up identical tries for Bowen and Thurston in a matter of minutes with trademark darts from dummy half.

10. Shane Tronc - 7
Another who helped lay a solid foundation up front in a positive sign in just his second match back from off-season shoulder surgery.

11. Luke O'Donnell - 7.5
Produced a typically powerful display when carting the ball up and defending on the edge of the ruck.

12. Jacob Lillyman - 7.5
Showed why he was rewarded with a spot in the starting side in a willing performance.

13. Travis Norton - 7
Went hunting for the ball more than he has in the past and showed his ball skills haven't dwindled in recent years.

14. David Faiumu - 7
Provided another dose of danger for the Broncos' defence when replacing Aaron Payne in the opening half.

15. Steve Southern - 7
Was willing as ever in both defence and attack although he did have trouble with ball handling at times.

16. Justin Smith - 7
Made the most of his time off the bench and provided another option for the Cowboys in attack.

17. Matthew Scott - 8
Youngster who got through a mountain of work when injected off the interchange bench in strong spells either side of halftime.

Notice if you look at the little picture on the front page of the Bully, all the ratings are different. It has Thurston listed as a 10/10 rather than a 8.5.

It has everyone else with a 7 except Bowen who has an 8.
And I had to really strain my eyes to read it.
