Bowie back for crucial clash
JOSH ALSTON
August 14th, 2009
TWO of the Cowboys under-20s stars have been cut down with injury but the club will welcome back fullback Sam Bowie for their must-win clash against the Bulldogs tonight.
Halfback Michael Morgan (back strain) and centre Michael Parker-Walshe (sprained ankle) have both been ruled out of tonight's clash while Morgan was also forced to withdraw from his Australian schoolboys commitments.
Neither injury is regarded as serious and both of them should be back before the end of the season. The return of Bowie is a welcome one for the Cowboys having lost him for most of the season when he injured his ankle in round two.
Sixteen-year-old sensation Wayne Ulugia will start off the bench, something coach Kristian Woolf said would benefit him in the long run.
''It probably comes at a good time because it gives us a little bit of a chance to rest Wayne,'' he said.
''Being a kid of his age and to have played the footy he has at this level is taxing on the mind and the body. We'll bring him off the bench which will give him a chance to freshen up a bit, hopefully it works well for us.''
North Queensland sit three points out of the top eight in ninth spot and must win tonight to keep their flickering finals hopes alive.
The Bulldogs are in the same boat - sitting in 10th position - and the winner of tonight's game could end the other team's season.
''It's an important game, it probably comes close to a must-win to keep in touch with the top eight,'' Woolf said.

Scoring seven tries to five, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys overcame the Bulldogs in a high scoring Toyota Cup match 40-26 at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Racing away to a commanding 22-4 lead in the first 30 minutes, the Cowboys were totally dominant before a late first half Bulldogs revival closed the gap to 22-14 by half time.
Some anxious moments followed for the home team as the Bulldogs scored again just after half time.
Then Wayne Ulugia came off the bench and scored a critical try in the 60th minute, opening the gap between the teams, and the Cowboys were able to put the game beyond doubt with two more tries.
North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 40 (James Segeyaro 2, Moses Pangai, Steve Eliott, Chris McLean, Wayne Ulugia, Obe Geia tries, Troyden Watene 6 goals)
d Bulldogs 26 (Peter Tuiafiso, Joe Matapuku, Lachlan Burr, Nathan Massey, Ben Barba tries, Ben Barba 3 goals)

Under-20 Cowboys still alive in finals race
JOSH ALSTON
August 15th, 2009
ADOPTING a finals mentality has lifted the Cowboys under-20s to a 40-26 win over the Bulldogs to keep their post-season hopes alive coming into the final three rounds of the competition.
Sitting three points out of the top eight and desperately needing a win to stay within reach, North Queensland came out firing and barged over for four early tries to lead 22-4.
The 'Dogs came back though, pegging the scoreline back to 22-20 through tries to Pakisonasi Afu, Lachlan Burr and Nathan Massey as ball control became an issue for both teams.
A Wayne Ulugia try appeared to have put the home team in a winning position, but again the Bulldogs came back through a chargedown try from Ben Barba.
But tries to Obe Geia and James Segeyaro – who bagged a double for the night – iced the game and kept the Cowboys' season alive.
Skipper Dane Hogan put in a typically gritty performance and said the players and coaching staff had spoken about the desperation required to get the win, which has effectively ended the Bulldogs season.
''We got asked during the week, all 17 of us, to dig deep and we did that tonight,'' he said.
''We've been training hard all week, we knew it was a must-win game, it is for every game from here on.''
Ulugia, playing off the bench to accommodate the return of Sam Bowie, was electric and scored on one of his first touches while Aidan Day was a wrecking ball in the middle of the park.
The win means North Queensland cannot finish any lower than ninth after this round of competition and can draw to within one point of the top eight depending on the result of the Warriors/Eels clash.
COWBOYS under-20s 40 (James Segeyaro, Moses Pangai, Steve Eliot, Chris McLean, Wayne Ulugia, Obe Geia tries; Troyden Watene 5 goals)
d BULLDOGS under-20s 26 (Peter Tuiafiso, Pakisonasi Afu, Lachlan Burr, Nathan Massey, Ben Barba tries; Ben Barba 3 goals)
