Under-20 Cowboys on a roll

JOSH ALSTON

August 1st, 2009

THE in-form Cowboys under-20s have put one hand on a finals berth after disposing of the Gold Coast Titans 36-28 at Skilled Park last night.

Quick tries to Lachlan Creighton and Jordan Rankin gave the home team an early lead, but from there it was all one-way traffic as the Cowboys steamrolled their opposition.

Winger Chippie Korostchuk bagged a double while Ray Thompson, Wayne Ulugia, Moses Pangai, Dylan Smith and Michael Morgan all crossed for North Queensland.

Late tries to Cody Walker, Shaun Spring and Scott McLennan for the Coast added some respectability to the scoreline, but the Titans weren't in the contest for much of the game.

It is the young Cowboys fourth win in five starts and has them temporarily in eighth place on the ladder and well poised to make the finals for the first time.

Coach Kristian Woolf credited the win to his halves combination, with young Australian representative Michael Morgan linking perfectly with halfback Ray Thompson, who spent most of the season sidelined with a shoulder injury.

''We've certainly played some good footy in the last few weeks and I don't think that's any coincidence that Ray's come back,'' he said.

''He certainly gives us a bit of direction and his leadership and positiveness are really good for us.''

With a host of players just 17 and fullback Wayne Ulugia just 16, Woolf said their experience at the top level this season had them well positioned to make a run into the finals.

''I think we've really grown in confidence, these young blokes that we've spoken about a number of times are just starting to realise they can compete at this level,'' he said.

''They can win games at this level.''

The Cowboys will face a tough challenge next week in Melbourne when they take on the fourth placed Storm.

COWBOYS UNDER-20s 36 (Chippie Korostchuck 2, Ray Thompson, Wayne Ulugia, Moses Pangai, Michael Morgan, Dylan Smith tries; Troyden Watene 4 goals)
d TITANS UNDER-20s 28 (Lachlan Creighton, Jordan Rankin, Cody Walker, Shaun Spring, Scott McLennan tries; Rankin 4 goals)

The Cowboys were great in this game, making plenty of metres with ease. They were cruising at 36 - 10 before letting in 3 late tries.
