Under-20s Cowboys win tough

JOSH ALSTON

July 27th, 2009

NORTH Queensland's surge into the top eight has been tempered by the news that prop Ronnie Alovili will likely miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated shoulder.

The Cowboys under-20s snuck into finals contention with a gritty 30-22 win over the Panthers on Saturday night but lost Alovili early when his shoulder popped out again. He has had issues with the joint this season and it took a long time to get it back in, sparking fears he may require surgery.

''He's done his shoulder again, we've got to make a decision in consultation with the doctor on whether to rehab it and try to make him available in three to four weeks or whether he gets surgery immediately,'' coach Kristian Woolf said.

''It's something we have to discuss with the doctors.

''He's not the only bloke missing from our core, we've got Tyson Martin who still has two weeks with suspension and Shaun Maloney has been missing round four, so that's some size and experience in the middle.

''In saying that I'm happy with the guys in the middle, Dylan Smith and Aiden Day were really good and I'm really happy with Sam Hoare who is still only 17 years old.''

The win gives the Cowboys a golden chance to push for a maiden finals berth over the final six rounds, with their young brigade leading the way.

Many of the players are 18 years old or younger and Woolf said the experience they had gained filling in for injured and suspended players would hold the club in good stead in the coming weeks.

''Once again it's in our hands, we play a fair few teams competing for that eighth spot,'' he said.

''It's a good position to be in with six rounds to go, that's for sure.

''Ronnie's obviously going to be a loss but we're very confident the young blokes can do the job, they showed that against Penrith.

''It's young blokes like Michael Parker-Walshe, Michael Morgan, Moses Pangai, those sorts of guys are really leading the way for us.

''As well as that some of the older guys, such as Dane Hogan, are really leading by example.''

Gritty win for NYC Cowboys

Saturday, July 25, 2009

The NYC Cowboys have overcome a tough Penrith Panthers side to win 30-22 at Dairy Farmers Stadium, in an exciting match where both sides lead at various stages.

This victory was vital for the 10th placed Cowboys who trailed 16-18 at the break.

With each side utilising good field position, the match was there for the taking but it was the Cowboys who showed greater determination and when James Segeyaro crossed in the 73rd minute, victory was in sight.

It still took strong defence to hold the Panthers out in the dying stages though and a late penalty goal brought up the final score.

North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 30 (Troyden Watene, Obe Geia, Michael Morgan, Michael Parker-Walshe, Chippie Korostchuk, James Segeyaro tries, Troyden Watene 3 goals)
d Penrith Panthers 22 (Sam Jones, Mitchell Cahalen, Zaram Watene, Jack Twist tries, Stirling Seijk 3 goals)
