What a game this should be, with plenty of FGers in both sides. Wish I was there to watch it.

yeah, I've been a little disappointed that this game has been played at Suncorp for the last 2 yrs, because the Clydesdales stadium is just down the road from me.

This game will ba as good as the main event.
Plenty of young newcomers for the Clydies and the Premiers from last season with a few first graders thrown in for measure.
On trial form I think the Guns will have the Clydies measure but should only be 6 to 12 points in it IMO.
Get out there early if you are heading out to Lang Park it will be well worth it.

From the game I watched Cashmere play in Mackay for the young guns, my impression was that his legs are too skinny and thus don't have enough drive. He didn't really make much impact in that game, while Tanielu who played for the Cowboys, impressed me a bit more.

Does anyone know if this game will be televised (perhaps on ABC2)?? Would probably be the pick of the Qld Cup games.

There won't be any ABC broadcasts untill about Round 6 or 7 :crybaby:.
(Due to other commitments that require the ABC's broadcasting equipment that is normally use for the Qld Cup games)

Young Guns Run Rampant
NORTH Queensland has blown apart an expected Queensland Wizard Cup blockbuster at Suncorp Stadium, thrashing Toowoomba 36-10 in a game which featured three State of Origin players.
Carl Webb, Josh Hannay and Corey Parker were all better than average performers on the day, but were left in the shadows of standouts Mark Henry and Brent McConnell.
The Young Guns led 18-4 at the halftime break, yet could well have been ahead 38-4, such was the number of missed opportunities in the opening stanza.
Halfback Russell Aitken opened the scoring not long after kick-off, touching down to the right of the posts.
A return to the same section of the paddock in the 8th minute saw Henry held up and pushed back. Shane Muspratt nearly scored on the next play, but was met with force by the shoulder of Parker
Twice the Young Guns missed opportunities to the far right, with Dean Payne dropping a chance while unmarked and another ball in his direction deemed forward.
Payne didn’t have the happiest of times early on, failing to catch a kick in the 27th minute which led to a scrappy Greg Eastwood try. Eastwood also wrong-footed the Townsville Centrals junior in the 71st minute for the last try of the game.
At 6-4 up, North Queensland constantly chipped away at the Toowoomba line.
Heavily-involved prop Rob Tanielu popped a neat ball to put Scott Bolton across the tryline, only for referee Michael Wise to call a forward pass. Soon after Rod Jensen narrowly missed an intercept which would have been hard to stop.
Toowoomba’s complacency with its left-to-right passing was exposed once more when Brenton Bowen stole an Ian Lacey ball in the 30th minute and outpaced Leon Bott and Fraser Anderson to the line.
Sealing their dominance in the first half, Young Guns sub McConnell gave a flat pass out of dummy-half to Webb, who inconceivably burrowed his way across right on the siren.
It wasn’t that Toowoomba was playing terrible. Certainly the Clydesdales weren’t at their best, but the North Queenslanders were far too potent
The trend continued in the second half, with the victors first botching a number of attempts; Gavin Cooper held up, Payne and Muspratt ignoring open men on the outside.
But then the premiers clicked into gear, with McConnell firing a beautiful pass to Hannay in the 52nd minute and then featuring in the lead-up to a flying Henry try in the 57th.
Fullback Henry was thoroughly impressive and looked sharp with every run. Similarly McConnell owned the second half with great pass selection and positioning.
In the dying stages McConnell twice broke into the clear. The first time he set Jensen up on the inside, only for ‘Rocket Rod’ to drop it cold. The second time he found Bowen, who raced around to place it under the sticks.
It best summed up the afternoon for the Young Guns. Clearly too good, but still with a few kinks to iron out.
NORTH QUEENSLAND 36 (Brenton Bowen 2, Carl Webb, Josh Hannay, Mark Henry, Russell Aitken tries; Josh Hannay 6 goals) beat TOOWOOMBA 10 (Greg Eastwood 2 tries; Corey Parker goal).

Stunning return seals win by Guns
By Kate Jacka in Brisbane - Townsville Bulletin
The Young Guns' Brent McConnell made a stunning return from injury yesterday as NQ picked up where they left off in the opening round of the Qld Wizard Cup at Suncorp Stadium.
In his first taste of football since the 2005 grand final, McConnell played a starring role in North Queensland's commanding 36-10 victory of the Toowoomba Clydesdales.
Playing predominantly at hooker rather than his preferred halfback, the former Burleigh No. 7 set up all three second half tries just weeks after knee surgery.
He was unlucky not to set up a fourth, Rod Jensen spilling a trademark McConnell pass just short of the try line.
"When he came on he was at hooker and, by his own admission, he doesn't enjoy doing that as much but he was great," captain Daniel Strickland said.
"And when he had a chance at halfback, he was easily one of our best."
After a messy start, including a Mark Henry error off the kick-off, the Young Guns took an 18-4 lead into the haf-time break following tries to Russell Aitken, Brenton Bowen and Carl Webb.
Without several bombed opportunities, the margin could easily have been 30 points.
Bowen grabbed a second four-pointer in a more controlled 40 minutes from the visitors to take his Qld Cup career tally to an amazing 59 tries from 58 matches.
Strickland left the field early in the second half with a torn calf muscle but is expected to play next weekend while Josh Hannay, who looked to be carrying his left shoulder late in the game, pulled up healthy according to coach Mick Crawley.
In an effort to prove their fitness, Hannay (shoulder) and Webb (quadricept) were solid, making the selectors task a tough one after the Cowboys' 36-4 win over Brisbane in first grade.
On debut, Crawley said he was pleased with his side's first hitout of the season.
"We probably created a lot of opportunities, it just wasn't the best excution,"he said.
"Our goal is to improve each week so that's a good starting point."
