Under-20s fall short in thriller

JOSH ALSTON
June 15th, 2009

A BRAVE second half comeback was not enough for the Cowboys under-20s, who fell agonisingly short in their 32-30 loss to competition heavyweights St George Illawarra yesterday.

Reeling at 28-6 at halftime, a repeat of the 48-16 flogging they received at the hands of Saints in round nine looked on the cards.

But a strong breeze at their backs and momentum gained from a stunning 80m try from young five-eighth Michael Parker-Walshe allowed the young Cowboys to come roaring back with five tries to give them a sniff of victory.

Chris McLean, Jared Huston and James Segeyaro all crossed in the second half while Dane Hogan set up a grandstand finish with his 77th minute try to bring North Queensland within two.

The clock was their enemy though and they were unable to complete the comeback against the third-placed Dragons.

Wayne Ulugia was the Cowboys' lone try-scorer in the first half while Joe Vickery and Henry Raiwalui both bagged doubles for the Dragons, with Mitch Rein and Kalifa Fai Fai Loa also crossing.

Ben Cronin may face a date with the judiciary after being placed on report for his involvement in a nasty spear tackle on Fai Fai Loa in the 50th minute while Dragon Alex McKinnon was also reported for a dangerous tackle on Parker-Walshe.

The loss is the under-20s second in a row and has seen them slip to 12th place on the ladder, two points adrift of the top eight.

DRAGONS TOYOTA CUP SIDE WIN IN 32-30 NAILBITER

Sunday, June 14, 2009

On an overcast and windy afternoon at WIN Stadium, the Dragons Under 20’s defeated a brave Cowboys outfit 32 – 30, after leading 28-6 at half-time.

An early knock-on by the Dragons, gave the Cowboys a great attacking chance in the first two minutes, yet the Dragons goal-line defence held strong.

The Cowboys then gave away a penalty for an infringement in the ruck, and with a full set of 6 on the Cowboys line, Dragons hooker Mitch Rein scooted from dummy-half, beating 3 defenders to score near the post. The try was converted by Beau Henry. Dragons leading 6 – 0.

After a beautifully worked move in the 13t minute, the Dragons spun the ball wide, with the ball eventually finding Joe Vickery on the wing. Beau Henry converted with a quality conversion from the sideline to take their lead to 12 – 0.

After having virtually no ball in the opening 15 minutes, the Cowboys big number 11 Troyden Waterie stepped 2 players on his own 40m line, before putting fullback Wayne Ulugia away who ran 60m to score in the 19th minute. Wateri converted the try for a 16 – 6 scoreline.

The Cowboys looked to be working their way back into the game, with a few good sets. However after back-to-back sets on the Cowboys line, quick hands saw the ball find Joe Vickery on the wing who dove outstretched to score and take the Dragons lead to 16 – 6.

In the 35th minute Dragons front-rower Trent Merrin sent replacement hooker Cameron King away with a well-timed offload. As the Cowboys looked to re-group, the ball was spun wide, before fullback Henry Raiwalui, stepped back on the inside, showing great illusiveness to beat a number of players and scoring under the posts. The conversion was successful by Beau Henry, stretching their lead to 22–6.

With 30 seconds to go in the second-half, fullback Henry Raiwalui, scored a brilliant try almost directly under the posts. Beau Henry converted to make it 28-6.

Although the Cowboys showed glimpses of form in the first half, it was the Dragons that had most of the running and with doubles from Joe Vickery and Henry Raiwalui, it looks to be a tough ask for the Cowboys to come back from a 28-6 half-time deficit.

7 minutes into the second half, with the Dragons attacking the Cowboys line, Cowboys five-eight Michael Parker-Walshe stopped a Dragons grubber with his foot, before regathering and sprinting 80m to score under the posts. The conversion attempt was successful by Ulugin. Dragons 28, Cowboys 12.
.
It wasn’t long before the Dragons hit-back, with a strong try to winger Kalifa Fai-Fai Loa, who carried 3 defenders over the line to score in the north-eastern corner. Conversion attempt was unsuccessful by Henry, Dragons leading 32-12.

Only 4 minutes later and the Cowboys hit back again, through a close-range try to Cowboys second-rower Chris Maclean. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful. Dragons still lead 32-16.

The Cowboys continue to fight their way back, with a quick try to centre Jared Huston. Conversion attempt was unsuccessful, meaning the Dragons are still 2 converted tries ahead. Dragons 32, Cowboys 20.

Another try to the Cowboys, with hooker James Segeyaro crashing over to make it 32-24. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.

Cowboys are looking dangerous, with continuous raids on the Dragons line.

The Dragons line eventually cracks with Cowboys lock Dane Hogan scoring near the posts in the 37th minute. Conversion successful, Dragons now lead cut to only 2 points.

The clock is against the Cowboys, and after a penalty to the Dragons and a steady set of six followed by a kick that ran dead, the siren sounds and the Dragons get away with a nail-biting win. Final score Dragons 32, Cowboys 30.

DRAGONS – 32 (Vickery 2, Raiwalui 2, Rein, Fai-Fai Loa Tries; Henry 4 Goals)
COWBOYS – 30 (Ulugia, Parker-Walshe, Segeyaro, Maclean, Huston, Hagan Tries; Ulluga 3 Goals)

'20s pledge to muscle up

ANTONY STEWART

June 14th, 2009

AFTER being beaten up in the middle of the park the last time they met, the Cowboys under-20s are aiming to muscle up in defence against the Dragons tomorrow.

A total of nine Dragons racked up more than 100m in the round eight 48-16 mauling which allowed star halfback Beau Henry room to run wild.

"The last time we played I wasn't happy with our defensive effort at all," coach Kristian Woolf said.

"We did get beaten a bit in the middle and that allowed them to score tries down the left edge which is the side Beau Henry likes to play.

"Certainly defence has been a focus has it has been in the last few weeks and we have certainly improved."

The young Cowboys pack will be without the services of prop Ronnie Alovili through injury and Dane Hogan is at long odds to play as well.

Local juniors Ben Morgan (Brothers) and Sam Hoare (Charters Towers) will step into the breach for them with Chris Faust also bolstering the pack.

Woolf said he was confident his charges could get the job done and force their way into the NYC top eight.

"We're always confident in our own ability and our own performances so we'll go down and play well and hopefully cause a bit of a surprise," he said.

The halves have also been restructured, with Queensland under-19s rep Michael Parker-Walshe to partner Michael Morgan.

Woolf said he was planning to use Ben Cronin at hooker after he had a game he would rather forget against South Sydney last weekend.

"Michael Parker-Walshe played quite good at five-eighth against Newcastle and we've been pretty happy with Michael Morgan for the majority of the year," Woolf said.

"We're quite keen to give Ben Cronin time at dummy-half, it would give James Segeyaro less time in the game and hopefully make (Cronin) more dangerous."
