Captains to Tee Off on 2006

NATIONAL Rugby League boss David Gallop will join QRL chairman John McDonald, State of Origin coach Mal Meninga and 11 club captains this Thursday to tee off on the 2006 Queensland Wizard Cup season.

The gala launch, to be held at the picturesque marquee of Victoria Park Golf Course, directly precedes Round One of the competition, with five games held Saturday and Sunday.

In a first for the Queensland Wizard Cup, all captains will assemble for a media shoot against the backdrop of Brisbane’s city skyline.

Over 200 guests, including several Former Origin Greats, will have the opportunity to win a corporate box and starter package to the 2006 grand final by hitting a Wizard sign on the Victoria Park driving range.

Invitees are to be entertained throughout lunch by guest speaker John Carew, talking ahead of the Commonwealth Games on the pressures faced by athletes and his time mentoring swimming great Kieran Perkins.

Large mannequins throughout the marquee will display playing strips of all clubs, including participants such as Redcliffe and Wynnum Manly who are set to unveil new logos and designs.

Already the Queensland Wizard Cup has received a boost with news that representative stars Brad Thorn, Corey Parker and Josh Hannay are all likely starters for the Toowoomba v Young Guns clash at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

Redcliffe, with the bye this weekend, will provide captain and chief playmaker Shane Perry to the Brisbane Broncos, while over 100 players with Wizard Cup experience will feature in the NRL and English Super League.

Of course for many players competing in the Wizard Cup, a career in the NRL is not the be-all and end-all.

An intriguing mixture of students, white-collar workers, labourers and even a minister-in-training will represent their local communities with pride in 2006, juggling family and work commitments.

This year’s Queensland Wizard Cup media guide booklet lists the occupations of more than 300 players plus their junior clubs, from the Cape to the Coast and from the UK to the Pacific Islands.

The FOGS Cup and FOGS Colts Challenge, which will also be launched Thursday, include new teams Western Districts, Aspley, Sunshine Coast and Tweed Heads.
