Heartbreaking finish for Toyota Cup
Saturday, April 25, 2009

Despite leading for much of the round 7 Toyota Cup clash against Manly, the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys lost 26-22 after a heartbreaking final 20 minutes.
In a sometimes fiery match, the Cowboys showed great tenacity in striking back against an early Manly try and by half time held a 16-10 lead.
Going to an 18-10 lead in the 52nd minute, the home side looked well on top but Manly were able to come back strongly, scoring two tries to one in the final 28 minutes.
When Obe Geia scored a spectacular try off a bomb in the 76th minute a dramatic finish seemed likely, but a disallowed Cowboys try in the 79th minute only contributed to the heartbreaking loss.
Manly Sea Eagles 26 (Blake Davey 2, James Buhrer, Michael Tiopira, Michael Oldfield tries, Mitchell Porter 3 goals)
d North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 22 (Ronnie Alovili, Moses Pangai, Michael Morgan, Obe Geia tries, Jack Cooper 1 goal, Wayne Ulugia 1 goal)

FIGHT CLUB ... Cowboys and Manly under-20s players
let fly in the match
A BRUTAL clash with Manly has left the Cowboys under-20s bashed, bruised and nursing the scars of a narrow 26-22 loss against the Toyota Cup's best team in 2009.
The match turned into a virtual bloodbath as the grinding style of play down the middle of the park frayed tempers more than once, with both sides coming to blows on two separate occasions. A total of four players were sin-binned, Cowboys' Steve Eliot and Dylan Smith as well as Manly's Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Darcy Lussick.
The Sea Eagles also lost Illija Radan and Shane Grey to injury while Cowboys Darren Tonihi played on despite a vicious cut on his head from one of the melees, before eventually succumbing to a corked leg.
The young Cowboys were valiant in defeat as they matched the unbeaten Sea Eagles in intensity and led for most of the contest.
But ball control was the killer in the end, with coach Kristian Woolf saying their completion rate had cruelled them.
"For most of the game we certainly matched them, if not got the nod over them at parts," he said.
"But at the end of the day we weren't good enough to finish it off unfortunately.
"We nearly won the game, but our completions were 14 out of 21 in the first half – which isn't good enough – and then 11 out of 19 in the second half which definitely isn't good enough. It makes it very hard to win any game when you're not completing that many sets."
The match review committee is almost certain to look at the wild brawls which were reminiscent of last year's ugly fight in the Cowboys-Broncos under-20s clash where five North Queenslanders were charged. But Woolf said Smith was unlucky to even be binned after he copped a battering from Lussick.
"From what I've seen he was certainly defending himself," he said.
"He copped at least two before he threw one so I would hope you can't get in too much trouble for defending yourself."
