Injuries continue to affect Cowboys' under-20s

JOSH ALSTON

April 11th, 2009

THE North Queensland Cowboys under-20s injury crisis has deepened with prop Shaun Malony gone for the season and halfback Ben Cronin to miss the next two weeks with a hip injury.

Malony ruptured his cruciate ligament against the Raiders with scans this week confirming the worst.

Coach Kristian Woolf said Malony was a big loss for the team.

"He's been playing really well for us and he was a big part of when we were coming back on the Raiders last weekend," Woolf said.

"He's one of our leaders in the team and one of the experienced players from last year – but at the end of the day it opens up an opportunity for someone else to come into the squad and fill his boots.

"I'm confident we've got the depth and the players to be able to handle the loss of him."

Nineteen-year-old Dane Hogan will shift from lock to cover Malony's loss after spending most of last season in the front row.

He said it would be a similar role, just a change of number.

"I played prop for the first three games anyway," Hogan said.

But the Titans, who have won three of their four matches, will be one of the biggest tests for the Cowboys.

After suffering a 38-26 loss to Canberra Raiders, Woolf said they were keen to bounce back and snap up a win.

"We let in a few soft tries before halftime and after halftime but we fought back really well from there and got back within six points," Woolf said.

"We had the opportunity to take the game from there but once again a couple of defensive lapses turned the momentum a little bit.

"Defence will be a fair bit of our focus this week – hopefully we'll do better in that department this weekend."

Titans dominate second half

Saturday, April 11, 2009

The Cowboys were tenacious in their response to the Titans in the opening half of their round 5 Toyota Cup clash but fell away as the visitors went on to win the match 48-16.

The home side were able to strike back quickly after conceding a try to the opposition in the first half, but it all but disappeared in the second.

Trailing 16-20 at half time, with two of the three Cowboys tries scored within minutes of a Titans score, the second half promised to be an equally thrilling match up.

It wasn’t to be though as the Titans piled on five unanswered tries to register a convincing win.

Gold Coast Titans 48 (Lachlan Creighton 2, Cody Walker 2, Kurt Foggo, Jy Hitchcox, Ben Ridge, Ripan James, Jordan Rankin tries, Jordan Rankin 6 goals)
d North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 16 (Michael Morgan, Obe Geia, James Segeyaro tries, Troyden Watene 2 goals)

Young Cowboys belted in Townsville

JOSH ALSTON

April 13th, 2009

A FORGETTABLE second half sent the depleted Cowboys under-20s spiralling to a 48-16 thrashing at the hands of Gold Coast on Saturday night.

Going into the game minus halves Ray Thompson, Sam Bowie and Ben Cronin, North Queensland were their own worst enemies with the ball as they handed the Titans easy field position.

But it was their defence that most disappointed coach Kristian Woolf after the side went from trailing 20-16 at halftime to 32-point losers.

"Our defence was pretty poor and we let them get very easy metres around the middle of the ruck which meant we were on the backfoot the whole time," he said.

"We were able to compete and when we completed our sets and played down their end we showed we can score points very easily.

"Obviously through making a lot of tackles we started to fatigue and our own errors made us keep having to keep tackling. Things just snowballed from there."
