Cronin, Bowie fill halves void for young Cowboys

JOSH ALSTON

March 21st, 2009

THE Cowboys under-20s will refuse to let the loss of captain and halfback Ray Thompson derail their start to the National Youth Competition.

The club received the devastating news this week that Thompson will be out for three months after dislocating his shoulder in the early minutes of their game against the Broncos.

Coach Kristian Woolf was confident new halves pairing Ben Cronin and Sam Bowie could do the job again against the Wests Tigers.

"It's obviously a blow, he's a very good player who carries a lot of experience and is a very good bloke to have around the team," he said.

"Sam Bowie did quite a good job there last week so he'll get another run (and) hopefully he works well again this weekend.

"I'm very confident in (Cronin's) ability ... he's certainly up to it and he proved that last week.

"He's got very similar experience and organisational skills as Ray so I'm very confident he can take a bit of a senior role there."

The Tigers were belted 50-10 by defending premiers Canberra last round.

But Woolf warned that scoreline did not indicate Wests' capabilities.

"They'll be looking for a win, I think it's important to note they lost to Canberra who won the premiership and have very much the same side as last year, so they were always going to hit the ground running," he said.

"We certainly don't want to read too much into that loss."

Woolf said confidence was high in the camp following their 26-22 win over the Broncos.

"They're very keen to get out and play in front of the home crowd and they'll carry a bit of confidence from last week's win," he said.

A slow start proved costly for the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys U20s who went down 6-22 to the West Tigers in round two of the Toyota Cup.

While the Cowboys never stopped trying, the Wests Tigers were able to maintain the lead throughout the match.

The brightest moment for the Cowboys came two minutes from half time when Steven Eliott crossed to narrow the gap to 6-10.

I watched the boys last week at Suncorp stadium against the broncos and they played okay but i honestly thought they would have played better than a 22-6 arse kicking...

Cowboys under-20s cop blast from coach

JOSH ALSTON

March 23rd, 2009

COWBOYS under-20s coach Kristian Woolf has called for improved discipline both on and off the field after their disappointing 22-6 loss to the Tigers on Saturday night.

Inspiring against the Broncos in round one after losing their skipper Ray Thompson to injury, the Cowboys struggled to control the ball for the entire game against Wests.

And Woolf spoke to his charges about late night celebrations after the game at their recovery session yester
day morning.

He lamented the absence of the killer attitude displayed in round one and said discipline would be the primary area he would cover this week.

"It was a bit disappointing," he said.

"Last week we showed up with a very good attitude and a very good effort and enthusiasm and all that kind of stuff.

"(Saturday) night I didn't think we were quite as good in that area for some reason.

"We didn't get a lot of ball in the first half and in saying that, we didn't get a lot of ball in the second half.

"That was more through our own errors and our own ill-discipline.

"We were either dropping the footy coming out of our own end or giving away penalties when we had them under the pump.

"That was very much our game I suppose."

The Cowboys still had their chances.

Late in the first half the Tigers looked sure to score but coughed up the ball over the line.

And then centre Steve Eliot touched down so they only trailed 10-6 at the halftime break.

"I thought we had every opportunity to take advantage of that in the second half but we were unable to do that through our ill-discipline once again," Woolf said.

They have a mountain to climb this week if they are to topple the Melbourne Storm who flogged the Broncos 48-14 on Friday night.

"There are a few things we need to touch on during the week," Woolf said.

"I'm certainly hopeful we can get up for another home game next week, we've got a very tough opponent in the Storm who have won their first two games."

WESTS TIGERS 22 (R Lui, J Clarke, J Mullany, S Dwyer tries; Mullany 2, Lui goal)
d NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS 6 (S Eliot try; B Cronin goal)
