RETURNING to his home state has been just the tonic for Cowboys under-20s five-eighth Ben Cronin.

Cronin is looking forward to showing his wares for the club in this weekend's trial against the Northern Pride in Atherton.

The 19-year-old played his junior football for Wynnum Manly in Brisbane but moved south last year when the Roosters offered him a contract in the maiden year of the National Youth Competition.

Now that he is back home in Queensland, he could not be happier.

"Training's a lot better, a lot more full on, a lot more purpose than down in Sydney," he said.

"And the people are a lot better. I prefer it in Queensland. I grew up in Queensland so I'm happy to stay here.

"It's a lot more person-to-person, a lot easier to talk to people and interact with the coaches, that sort of thing. Everyone's more friendly and it feels more like a team than a business."

His spot in the team for round one is all but assured but Cronin is still aware of the race for positions and is looking to put his best foot forward over the trials.

"I haven't played any games yet so hopefully I'll get some form in the trials and cement a spot," he said.

"There's a lot of competition, not just through halves, but all the positions. A lot of the boys have to play well through the trials to be in the team for round one."

And after last year's wooden-spoon finish, Cronin said the players were ready to atone and surge their way up the NYC ladder.

"Up here at the Cowboys we're at least hoping to get into the top eight," he said.

"I think we're good enough to get into the top four quite easily if we knuckle down.

"I know the boys last year weren't happy with where we finished so hopefully we'll have a big season and get a few semi-final games.

"Talking with a few of the boys from last year they lost a lot of games just through a lack of experience in the last 10 minutes.

"Hopefully, I've already had a year under my belt, I can help there."
