View Full Version : NQ or Townsville?

Since Townsville has been home to the NQ Cowboys for 10 years, Townsville has contributed immensly to the team, more so than in any other North Queensland town. If the Cowboys had been originally called the Townsville Cowboys, this would have been better. Arguably the fans from NQ would have still have followed the team, (People from all over QLD follow the broncos) and the city of Townsville would have benefited immeasurably by having the name of the city in national match reports, competition ladders etc. Whilst people from Townsville think that the town is the centre of the universe, it is clearly is not. Many people from other parts of Australia hardly know where Townsville is. Why should Cairns benefit from the team being called the NQ Cowboys, when they didnt show any support for the two NRL games that were taken to the city a few years ago. Townsville possesses the biggest supporter base of fans of the Cowboys, and not only should the city have been rewarded with hosting the team, but the team should have arguably been named after the city as well.
Anyone agree with me?

No.
Considering that the Cowboys home ground is not in the city of Townsville, but in the city of Thuringowa, there is no way in heck they could be called the 'Townsville Cowboys'.

Thuringowa is a highly irrelevant city in relation to the cowboys. When was the last time a media report stated that the Cowboys were from Townsville........................................ .................a long time ago....if ever.

On the crowd, considering the distances involved the fact that the Cowboys get such a large number of people from outside the Thuringowa/Townsville area through the gates is a indication of just how much the team is considered a 'NQ' team :thumbright:.

I'm not going to take the **** out of you Daryll but your post is very naive. It is the NQ Cowboys & forever should be. I think you need to sit down & read the history of why the team was set up in the 1st place & then you may form a more educated opinion. :thumbright:

Gee-wizz mate, you mast have your head shoved up you a$$ that far that you can see sun light coming thruogh your teeth!!!!
Before they started winning on the feild most people couldnt care less about the Cowboys. By "people" I mean locals from Sarina, Mackay, ProsVagas, Bowen, Ayr, Townsville, Ingham, Innisvale, Cairns & all the way up the cape, all the little towns (& big ones) out to the N.T boarded.
Now that they have gotten sucsess on the feild every one has jumped on the band wagon with support. Which is great for the game, club & the hole of NQ. Alot of Tvl locals couldnt care less about them 5 yrs ago. I have friends in Tvl that have lived up there for 8yrs & only went to there 1st game in 2004 & are now season ticket holders. I agree that most of the support at the games now are from tvl locals but a hell of alot of us travel long distances to see the games live. Would all those same Tvl locals that go to the games now (excluding the supporters that went to every game from 95-03) travel 400km to a game in Mackay or Cairns???? I THINK NOT!!!
Living in Mackay I would have profered that they were baist here, but for the best place in NQ for the games to be held Townsville is the one. I meet up with friends from Cairns 1-2 a year it tvl for a game, witch is perfect because its 4 hours for both of us.
So if you didnt understand my point of view yet, I DESAGREE WITH YOU DARYLL.

I couldn't agree more.
I don't & never have supported the Drongos because they are Brisbane not Qld. If the Cowboys changed as you suggested then they can take their season tickets I have and shove them up their ...
NQ Cowboys is the only way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're serious and not taking the ****.
Since Townsville has been home to the NQ Cowboys for 10 years, Townsville has contributed immensly to the team, more so than in any other North Queensland town. It's kind of hard for us to contribute more to the Cowboys than Townsville when we're 400km away.
If the Cowboys had been originally called the Townsville Cowboys, this would have been better. Arguably the fans from NQ would have still have followed the team.Very debateable. I switched to the Broncos when they started because they were the ONLY Qld team in the comp. Why would I switch to following as Townsville side with the local rivalry as it is? An NQ side on the other hand...
the city of Townsville would have benefited immeasurably by having the name of the city in national match reports, competition ladders etc. Whilst people from Townsville think that the town is the centre of the universe, it is clearly is not. Many people from other parts of Australia hardly know where Townsville is.Ah, it's all about you, is it?
Why should Cairns benefit from the team being called the NQ Cowboys, when they didnt show any support for the two NRL games that were taken to the city a few years ago.Didn't show any support? We sold out the biggest venue in the city for the first game, at which point the locals realised you couldn't see the game because it was at an Aussie Rules ground that sloped down from the centre. When the second game came around, the club did no promotion at all, it ****ed down rain and the crowd was down. After which the club's enlightened leadership at the time was heard to say, "Well, we made the effort and they threw it in our faces, they can get rooted" which only served to deepen the mistrust btw the two created by the club ignoring Cairns in the past and which is only now being broken down by the New Deal.
Townsville possesses the biggest supporter base of fans of the Cowboys, and not only should the city have been rewarded with hosting the team, but the team should have arguably been named after the city as well.Durr! It has the largest population in NQ, it's central to other population areas that may support the team and IT HAS THE TEAM! Of course it has more fans Brainiac. And if it was based in Cairns, as it went perilously close to being in the early days, there would be more supporters in Cairns than in Townsville.
Anyone agree with me? No, you're an idiot.

Townsville is not a big enough population centre to host a team (i.e. Brisbane, Newcastle, Melbourne) hence the need to be the NQ Cowboys.
This gives everyone in NQ some sense of ownership (if that is the right word) of the team and therefore generates more supporters. Whilst people outside of Townsville would still support the Cowboys if they were the Townsville Cowboys, I think you would find you would get more people support the NQ Cowboys.
And it draws all the NQ people together, a sort of bond.
So no I don't agree with you and I doubt anyone will.

A lot of the time I think of the Cowboys as 'townsville's team' being from Townsville and all. I sort of forget about everywhere else I suppose. I went down to the trial game in Mackay and saw people wearing Cowboys jerseys for for a split second I thought 'hey people wear Cowboys jerseys down here as well'..hahah.. yeah, like I said..for a split second.

Whatever, ******.
It's not Townsville's own team. They don't belong to Townsville. They represent a whole region, and are based in Townsville - there is a difference!. Nqboy has illustrated clearly the reasons why taking home games to Cairns did not work at the time. I was there for both games - Cazalys is a ****house venue for league.
Incidentally, Cairns and Mackay have sold out all their trial games since 2004. Some Sydney teams have reportedly contacted the Cairns district league to see if they can host their 'home' game against the Cowboys in Cairns in future.
The Cairns Supporters Club - which nqboy is involved with, I believe - has also gone from strength to strength. Yes, all of this has coincided with on-field success, BUT there have been thousands of Cowboys supporters from beyond Townsville who feel exactly the same way about North Queensland in 1995 as they do in 2005.
After all, what suggestion did you have in mind for Cairns, Mackay, Rocky, Tablelands supporters, exactly? Don't support a team in the NRL, because it's not in the same postcode as you reside in? Your arrogance and stupidity is astounding.

This is such a sensitive topic to everyone that doesn't live in Townsville it seems. Calm down! lol..

Daryll wake up and smell the cow **** that your speaking, the NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS are so named because they draw players and fans from NORTH QUEENSLAND!
If they were to be a Townsville side then for starters they would have to be called something other than the Cowboys as Rockhampton or the Isa or any part of west Queensland would have to lay claim to the Cowboys name as they are the cattle country, Couldn't use the Marlins because Cairns would take that, couldn't use the Crushers or Cane Cutters because Mackay, The Burdekin and Ingham would all lay claim there...
So what is your Townsville side going to be called??? Oh by the way you better look for another ground because you would always be playing away games since DFS is in Thuringowa....
To refresh yor memory go and Listen to Lee Kernaghan's song "C'mon the Cowboys" The Cowboys first theme song.

I think the fact that this excellent North Queensland team is "based" in Townsville, gives Townsvillians a feeling of pride, a feeling of seniority, yet leaves the door wide open to fans from absolutely EVERYWHERE to feel part of it.
It's a good name, and I think it's stuck well after 10+ years.

Excellent point Rob, but just for Darryll's benefit (as it seems he doesn't know too much about the club), here's how it starts:
From the Gulf down to Rocky
And Isa in the west...
Why should Cairns benefit from the team being called the NQ Cowboys, when they didnt show any support for the two NRL games that were taken to the city a few years ago.
I think you will find that the crowds that turned up to the these two matches 16,000 and about 10,000 would be in the top 3 or so crowds for that year for the Cowboys. Remember only a few years ago the crowd average was falling to about 12,000 a game.
The last two preseason games in Cairns have draw crowds of 17,000 and 12,000. Some Sydney NRL clubs would be drooling over crowds of this size if it was a Proper NRL match.

From memory, I think the Cazaly's crowds were posted at 13,000 (jammed in like sardines) and then 6000. This years trial crowd was capped and sold out at 15,000.
I think you will find that the crowds that turned up to the these two matches 16,000 and about 10,000 would be in the top 3 or so crowds for that year for the Cowboys.
13000 for the Penrith game which was to many for Cazalys (it was packed like sardines) and only 6113 turned up for the Northern Eagles game.
I spose what I was getting at is that its bollocks that crowds outside of Townsville starting jumping on once the team was winning.
Crowds were dropping of badly in 02 and 03, and it wasn't just out of towners not turning up.

Agreed, it is suprising what winning does though. In 2002 you could have let a grenade off at some games and you would have only effected the security guards, now it is the cool place to be, oh well, as long as people keep handing over their $$$ its all good.
