Minibeave I'd suggest the furthermost southern suburb of Cairns; Townsville!

Cairns is ok, Cardwell is much better though. The Hinchinbrook channel and Hinchinbrook Island is only a stubby throw away and is awsome for fishing and relaxing. It is all fairly expensive for real estate though, most places are and they're growing rapidly. Avoid Ayr at all costs, way too many inbreds, bible bashers and flower power people.... it is cheap though.... all that bloody smoke, germs and what have you...:sneaky:
Innisfail, Proserpine and Ingham are nice spots, the pubs in Innisfail can be a bit dodgy though.
Townsville has a good footy team but is a $hithole to look at, just like Rocky, an industrial wasteland.
Mackay is good for fishing but is a dump of a place too and it has way too many bloody bikers, fair dinkum where else has three different clubs in it.....from memory there are the Odin's Warriors, Outlaws and Rebels. I suppose you just have to mind ur business and stay out of their way.
I reckon when I finally sell up and head north it will be to Ingham, I've enjoyed the times I have stayed there. Picturesque, quiet, good fishing and the pub is great.

Yorkey's knob, Smithfield is my pick.
