BRING IT ON: Sam Hoare heads to Townsville today thurs to
join the North Queensland Cowboys’ under-20s squad.
Final exams might be over for Rockhampton rugby league star Sam Hoare, but his toughest test still awaits him.
Hoare, who graduated from Emmaus College last week, heads to Townsville today to join the North Queensland Cowboys under-20s squad for their pre-season campaign, taking a big step towards his ultimate goal - playing in the NRL.
The celebrations were short-lived for the 17-year-old prop, who was instead bracing himself for three months of gruelling conditioning under infamous hardman and fitness guru Billy Johnstone.
“I've heard some stories about him (Billy),” he laughed.
“We train for the next three months starting Monday, with a week off over Christmas.”
Hoare, who won a scholarship with the Cowboys when he was 15, has a two-year contract with the club and will join their assault on the National Under-20s competition next season.
“I'm feeling a bit of everything - nervous, excited. I'm really looking forward to it,” he said.
The Rockhampton Brothers junior will see a familiar face at training, with Central Comets young gun and fellow Brothers star Mitchell Zornig also making the trip up north.
“We're actually going to be living together too,” he said.
“I've been to a few training camps and sessions up there, so I know quite a few of the boys.”
Hoare played himself into a contract with a powerhouse performance in a one-off game against a West Tigers development side last September.
He followed up with a strong representative season this year, which included selection in the Confraternity Shield Queensland merit side.
The talented forward, who tips the scales at 105kg and stands at 191cm, has been accepted into James Cook University, studying exercise physiology.
