The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys have appointed Kristian Woolf as coach of the Cowboys Toyota Cup team for the next two years.

Woolf has performed the role of Development Manager with the club for the past three years, and General Manager Football Dean Lance believes he has the right credentials for the position.

"Kristian is one of the hardest workers at the club, with a fine record of coaching young men," Lance said. "His new role as the under 20s coach is a good fit."

Woolf is a qualified teacher with a rugby league background, having coached the Ignatius Park College's league team in the annual Confraternity Shield as well as the North Queensland and Townsville junior teams in the 15 to 18 years age groups.

The North Queensland local attended St Augustine’s College in Cairns before completing dual degrees in Human Movements and Physical Education at QUT in Brisbane.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to work with our young up and coming players who are aiming to play in the NRL," Woolf said.

"It's also a chance to realign myself with some of the young men I worked with previously through school and representative teams," Woolf said.

Woolf replaces outgoing Toyota Cup coach Grant Bell.

SUCCESSFUL schoolboys coach Kristian Woolf was yesterday named the Cowboys new under-20s mentor for the next two seasons. Woolf, who will replace inaugural coach Grant Bell, makes the step up after being the North Queensland NRL club's development manager over the past three years.

He has coached the Ignatius Park College team in the annual Confraternity Shield, while he has also coached NQ and Townsville sides in the 15 to 18-years age groups.

Woolf said he was thrilled to have a chance to guide the Cowboys' stars of the future.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to work with our young, up-and-coming players who are aiming to play in the NRL and also realigning myself with some of the young men I worked with previously through school and representative teams," he said.

Meanwhile, three Cowboys under-20s players will make the step up to the Queensland Cup next season after being recruited by the Cairns-based Northern Pride.

Chris Riesen, 20, Scott Idec, 19, and Tom Humble, 19, will each be ineligible to play in the NRL Youth Competition and the Pride were quick to snap them up. The trio were included in a 25-man roster announced this week.

In a shock exclusion, inaugural captain and former Cowboys and St George Illawarra halfback Chris Sheppard was not named.

But coach Andrew Dunemann said he was confident Sheppard would play in 2009.
