76th Minute Heartbreak

Leading competition front runners Canberra 18-16 with 10 minutes to go, a valiant North Queensland Toyota Cowboys U20 lost in the dying minutes .

Playing with great determination, the Cowboys fought Canberra all the way in an often torrid encounter, taking the lead for the first time in the 69th minute when Nathan Barraclough charged over. Canberra found something extra in the dying minutes however to seal the match.

Under-20 Cowboys lose another arm wrestle

HEARTBREAKING finishes have followed the Cowboys under-20s all season and Saturday night was no different as they were pipped 20-18 by the table-topping Raiders.

The game was an arm-wrestle the entire way through but it was the North Queenslanders who stuck their noses in front with 10 minutes to go courtesy of a Nathan Barraclough try.

But a knock-on by fullback Steven Elliot was the killer for the Cowboys as Canberra's Jarrad Kennedy grounded the ball to snatch the victory. The error was a cruel one for Elliot, who had an otherwise solid game deputising for regular custodians Sam Bowie (injury) and Tom Humble (suspension).

Grant Bell gave credit to the young back's performance at the post-game awards.

Tyson Martin also put in a strong performance and was rewarded with a try.

The other try-scorer, Shaun Maloney, was exceptional in the front row, earning the Cowboys' player of the game award.

The Cowboys play 15th-placed Cronulla this weekend and need a win to shake off the wooden spoon after last-placed Sydney drew to within a point with a thumping 40-6 win over South Sydney.
