CRISP WORK ... North Queensland under-20s hooker
and captain Ryan Carr fires out a pass on Saturday night
THE Cowboys under-20s secured a dramatic one-point win over the Gold Coast in the National Youth Competition, prevailing 35-34 on Saturday night. The fifth-placed Titans thrashed the Cowboys 46-10 in their first-round contest, but the North Queenslanders showed vast improvement from that night to secure their fourth win of the season.
They made the job hard on themselves though, squandering a 28-4 advantage just before halftime with Titans Ben Ridge, Siosaia Va Ve and Shannon Walker all crossing late in the game to tie the scores.
Whiz kid Jordan Rankin had a chance to steal a win after the Cowboys were penalised close to their own line late in the contest but missed the penalty attempt.
In-form fullback Tom Humble finally sealed the result though in the 77th minute with a field goal.
A flurry of tries at the start of the game laid the platform for the result with Humble, Ben Lancini and Chippie Korostchuck rushing over in the first 17 minutes.
Lancini and Humble collected doubles in the game while Ben Spina also scored.
The win is likely to ensure the Cowboys stay off the bottom of the Toyota Cup ladder in their first year.
