All-in brawl mars cup clash

NOW, NOW BOYS ... Broncos and Cowboys players
clash during the Toyota Cup match last night

THE rivalry between Brisbane and the Cowboys is set to run hot well into the future after the Broncos triumphed 34-16 in a brutal and spiteful Toyota Cup encounter last night.

Tensions simmered for much of the under-20s contest with three flare-ups in a game that was in the balance until the final 15 minutes.

The biggest came five minutes from the end and was one of the most vicious all-in brawls seen at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

Bronco Michael Spence and Cowboys Shaun Maloney started the brawl in which every player threw punches and left Brisbane's Alex Glenn a bloody mess.

Spence and Maloney were marched for 10 minutes for inciting the violent display.

Coach Grant Bell said his squad had escaped the fracas injury-free and it had erupted because of the intensity of the game.

"There's a few bumps and bruises that we'll know more about at rehab tomorrow, nothing out of the blue," he said.

"There's a few guys that are sore because it was a very physical game."

Nothing could split the two teams at the halfway mark with the score locked at 12-all.

The Broncos were the first to cross through centre Gerald Beale, but it didn't take the Cowboys long to respond when captain Ryan Carr darted over.

From there, though, it was one-way traffic as the Broncos scored three tries late in the half to consign the North Queenslanders to another loss.

"I just think it was a very intense match and not taking anything away from the Broncos who are a good footy team, but I don't think the scoreline indicated the closeness of the game," Bell said.

BRISBANE 34 (G Beale 2 A Glenn A McCullough J Hoffman J Yow Yeh tries J Kahu 5 goals)
d NORTH QUEENSLAND 16 (C Korostchuck S Moloney R Carr tries T Humble 2 goals).

Qld rugby league brawlers disciplined

By Wayne Heming

Brisbane and North Queensland officials will dress down players involved in an all-in brawl in the Toyota Cup match in Townsville on Friday night.

Eight players - three from Brisbane and five from the Cowboys - were slapped with contrary conduct charges on Monday ranging in gradings from one to three.

The Under-20s clash erupted in the 75th minute into a vicious punch up lasting a few minutes.

Brisbane back-rower Michael Spence, who reacted to a high tackle, copped the heaviest charge - a grade three offence carrying 325 points which would be reduced to 243 points with an early guilty plea.

Of the five Cowboys charged, Blackwater Crushers halfback Tom Humble was the hardest hit with a grade two charge worth 225 points, discounted to 188 with an early guilty plea.

The other players charged were Andrew McCullough, and Mitchell Dodds from Brisbane and Cowboys Chris Reisen, Ryan Carr, Shaun Maloney, Sam Bowie.

Onlookers described the brawl in which players threw several haymakers as a "good old fashioned stink".

"We certainly don't condone that behaviour and it was out of character for the boys," said Brisbane football manager Peter Nolan.

"Obviously the officials have taken a dim view of it and we'll be speaking to all the players and reminding them of what is expected from them.

"I've already spoken to Michael (Spence) and will decide tomorrow what action to take in regard to all the charges."

Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr said the club would definitely speak to the players involved in the brawl.

"You don't have five players charged and not address it, that would be very poor on our behalf," Parr told AAP.

"We don't condone and we'll be speaking to them but I'd hate to see people jump on the bandwagon about it because it's not immune to just that one game, it's been 100 years."

Charges laid over brawl

ANTONY STEWART

July 22nd, 2008

UP to five Cowboys under-20 players face suspension following their spiteful Toyota Cup clash with the Brisbane Broncos on Friday night.

In a game high in tension throughout, tempers erupted with five minutes left on the clock as the players engaged in an all-in brawl.

Eight players involved in the incident _ five Cowboys and three Broncos _ were charged with contrary conduct by the NRL match review committee yesterday.

Brisbane's Michael Spence faces the longest stint on the sidelines, a three-week penalty, but that can be reduced to two weeks with an early guilty plea.

For North Queensland, fullback Tom Humble faces a two-week suspension, but an early guilty plea should see him miss just one game.

Chris Reisen faces two weeks out, even with an early plea, due to 93 carryover points from an incident earlier in the season.

Fellow Cowboys Shaun Maloney, Sam Bowie and Ryan Carr can all escape suspension with an early guilty plea.

Broncos Mitchell Dodds and Andrew McCullough are in the same position.

The clubs have until noon today to decide whether they will fight any of the charges.

Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr said the club would speak to the players involved in the brawl.

"You don't have five players charged and not address it, that would be very poor on our behalf," Parr said.

"We don't condone it and we'll be speaking to them but I'd hate to see people jump on the bandwagon about it because it's not immune to just that one game, it's been (going on for) 100 years."

Eight wild young Cowboys and Broncos cited after brawl

July 21, 2008

The new and so far resoundingly successful Toyota Cup competition has earned an unwanted piece of rugby league history after a wild brawl between North Queensland and Brisbane players resulted in the most charges from a single incident under the NRL match-review system.

A staggering eight players - five from North Queensland and three Broncos - were charged with contrary conduct after last Friday night's brawl, which lasted more than a minute.

Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr expressed disappointment at the number of his players involved and confirmed all five would be admonished for their behaviour. "You don't like to see that many charges but none of them have been charged with a major offence," Parr said. "I didn't see the brawl, I was at a sponsors' function, but [football manager] Dean Lance and the coaching staff are aware of my opinion of it and they're clear on my thoughts of getting the message across to the players. It's disappointing that they've been charged and I'm disappointed that the brawl escalated the way it did.

"But whilst we don't condone it, it's not the first brawl to ever happen in 100 years and I'd hate to see it get blown out of proportion."

Broncos player Michael Spence was hit with the most serious offence, a grade-three charge, after throwing several punches during the 75th-minute incident, and faces a three-match ban.

Cowboys player Tom Humble was charged with a grade-two offence after running in from fullback to join the melee, which at one stage split to form two separate brawls.

The eight players - Cowboys Humble, Chris Riesen, Ryan Carr, Shaun Maloney and Sam Bowie and Broncos Spence, Andrew McCullough and Mitchell Dodds - face a ban of 11 matches between them.

Toyota Cup manager Michael Buettner said: "It's disappointing to see any incident like that, especially with the severity of it. But the [NRL] match review committee has spent plenty of time on it and they're more than qualified to take responsibility and I think they've done a good job."

NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley said no incident in the history of the administration - which was formed in 1998 - had produced so many charges.

NRL Toyota Cup reputation spoiled by Cowboys brawl

By Steve Ricketts
July 22, 2008 12:00am

THE image of the NRL's under-20s competition have taken a hit when eight players were charged with contrary conduct stemming from a wild brawl.

Five Cowboys - Tom Humble, Chris Reisen, Ryan Carr, Shaun Maloney and Sam Bowie - plus Broncos Michael Spence, Andrew McCullough and Mitchell Dodds were all found to have cases to answer from last Friday's game in Townsville.

Spence (grade 3) and Humble (grade 2) face three game and two game bans respectively and Reisen a one game ban because of carry over points. An early guilty plea will see the rest available to play this weekend.

"It was out of character for our blokes but we'll be reminding them of the club's expectations," Broncos football manager Peter Nolan said last night.

Out of character maybe, but I do remember a Broncos U20's game earlier in the year where a similar all in 'push/shove/swing' happened.

(I think it might of been their Round 9 game vs Manly?)

Oh of cause that would be out of character for the Broncos  What are they trying to say ? that it is the norm for the young cowboys . What a crock!!!
Boys will be boys they were all in it from both sides.
