Under-20s' unbeaten run comes to an end
JOSH ALSTON
July 14th, 2008
THE Cowboys' unbeaten run in the Toyota Cup was halted in New Zealand on Saturday when the under-20s went down 32-12 to the Warriors.
North Queensland went into the game full of confidence after notching up two wins and a draw in their past three games.
But they were unable to hold off the physical Warriors side, who bashed and barged their way over the top of the Cowboys.
Nick Slyney was one of North Queensland's best with 32 tackles, but he conceded they were never in the contest against the huge Kiwis.
"They're a pretty big pack, that big Warriors pack, they came out and had a game plan and muscled us out of the game I think," he said.
"We knew if we could just hold the ball and complete our sets we could keep in touch with them, but we didn't end up doing that so they got away from us.
"That's part of their game plan, try to intimidate the young fellas and try to bash them out of the game."
Slyney has played two games in the NRL this season and he said his experiences in first grade had groomed him into a leader at the club.
"It's been good, it gives you a bit more of a leadership role in the under-20s," he said.
He said the Cowboys were still riding high on the back of a breakthrough month that has lifted them off the bottom of the Toyota Cup ladder.
"We've just been over the moon, our spirits have been so high and training has been awesome," he said.

Can anyone tell me why other under 20 toyota cup teams are not following the agreement of players having to work or study full time ? No wonder our boys are getting flogged they are following that agreement !!!
