Cowboys' Cooper enjoys early taste of success

VICTORY has been sweet for Cowboys under-20s player Jack Cooper who now boasts a 50 per cent strike rate from his four games with the club.

The Cairns junior has played in the forwards for North Queensland in their recent back-to-back wins.

After a season of woe in which the Cowboys had gone winless over 13 rounds, Cooper said they had finally found a winning formula.

"We were that little bit off, but the boys have pulled together and to get a few wins is good because we weren't that far off it," he said.

"I think all the other teams know that too, just because we hadn't won a game and they were coming to (play) us they weren't going to to take us lightly."

Cooper was brought in four weeks ago after spending most of the year with Saints in the Townsville and Districts Rugby League competition.

He has impressed coach Grant Bell in his stint in the backrow and said he was enjoying playing in the National Youth Competition.

"It's good, coming into the side is a bit nerve-wracking because you don't really know all the plays and you don't know what strengths other people have," Cooper said.

"But to be included in the team has been great, it's been the best.

"It's been the best four games I've played all year.

"Playing in the Townsville local league is good, but playing for the under-20s is like a really good comp, it's good football to play."

It was a daunting experience to run out on to Olympic Park last Saturday in 12C in front of an already large – and hostile – crowd.

But Cooper said the 14-10 win over Melbourne was one of the best experiences of his short career.

"It's too good just to get out there and especially beat Melbourne on their home ground," he said.

"The whole experience was awesome."

A Third Draw in the Toyota Cup

The Cowboys under 20 side drew 18 -18 with ninth placed South Sydney in a tough round 16 encounter at Dairy Farmers stadium.

Drawing first blood with a try to Tom Humble in just the third minute the Cowboys had raced away to a 12-4 lead by the 17th minute before simple errors allowed South Sydney back in the game.

Leading 12-10 at break the Cowboys fell behind just after half time when South Sydney’s Eddie Paea scored his second try for the night, but the Cowboys never gave up and struck back in the 53rd minute through a Ben Lancini try after some good attacking play.

The final stages of play had both sides trying desperately to break the deadlock but ultimately the Cowboy’s left the field with their third draw for the season.
