Under-20s hanging on to semi-final hopes

JOSH ALSTON

23Jun08

A SOLID defensive effort in the second half has seen the Cowboys under-20s hold off Melbourne to post their second successive win and lift them off the bottom of the Toyota Cup ladder.

North Queensland withstood a barrage of attacking raids in the second quarter, holding just a 14-6 lead.

But aside from allowing a try to Malo Feterika in the dying minutes of the game to bring up the 14-10 final score, they were watertight on their line.

The win has allowed the Cowboys to leapfrog the Roosters into 15th place after spending the most of the season anchoring the ladder.

Five-eighth Ray Thompson linked perfectly with halfback Brady Payne and praised his forwards' efforts in laying the platform for the win.

"(Our defence) is pretty good, the boys have been working hard on it so it's good to get the reward," he said.

"It's something we've been working on, our defence, and the boys take pride in it.

"The forwards deserve a big rap for that."

While talk of making the finals may seem fanciful, Thompson said the players had not written their chances off yet.

They will likely need to win all of their remaining encounters to be any chance of slipping into the eight, but Thompson said they were taking it one game at a time.

"We've talked about it but we're just taking it a game at a time, just keep chopping away at it and hopefully we'll find ourselves there," he said.

"We'll just take on South Sydney next week and hopefully we'll get a result there too.

"It will be a good chance to even it up, we took that into this game against (Melbourne) too and hopefully we can do that against Souths."
