Under-20 Cowboys get timely boost

JOSH ALSTON

07Jun08

NORTH Queensland's under-20s have received a timely boost ahead of their clash with Wests this afternoon with captain Ryan Carr and half Ray Thompson both expected to return from injury.

Carr received a nasty knock to his shoulder last week against Penrith and was initially expected to be out for some time.

But coach Grant Bell said his progression had been impressive and the hooker has been named at No. 9.

"Things have been pretty encouraging, he copped a knock on the shoulder and we gave the opportunities to the physios and that to work on him," Bell said.

"He's progressing well and we're reasonably confident he'll play."

Thompson is also set to make his comeback from an ankle injury after being named last weekend but ruled out at the last minute.

He trained strongly this week and is expected to return off the bench.

"Last week we were really confident that he'd be right, his ankle at the back end of the week puffed up and ended up ruling him out," Bell said.

"This week he's travelling well and he's done everything in training that we've expected of him.

"Fingers crossed, both those boys will come through and will play."

While the going has been tough for the winless Cowboys this season, Bell said the call-up of Nick Slyney to first grade had been a timely reminder to his charges that there was more to play for than premiership glory.

Obe Geia has also earned a call-up to the wing in first grade this season.

"You look this week to the selection of a guy in first grade like Nick Slyney and I think that is as much of a victory in a lot of ways to the boys," he said.

"They're excited about it, it sends a signal to them that there's now two guys out of the squad this year that have now got an opportunity in first grade.

"There's others that see themselves and say `I'm in that similar mix if I play hard, if I train hard, if I do my work those opportunities will present for me as well'.

"I think that's a very important part of this as well."

Cowboys under-20s beaten again

JOSH ALSTON

09Jun08

A SECOND-HALF revival was not enough to lift the Cowboys off the bottom of the National Youth Competition ladder as they crumbled to a 42-22 loss against Wests in Campbelltown on Saturday.

Ryan Carr and Ray Thompson both made successful returns from injury for the Cowboys, the latter a constant threat around the ruck.

But it was Tigers young gun Tim Moltzen who stole the show.

The dynamic utility helped the Wests first-grade squad cut the Cowboys to pieces in the round two NRL clash in Townsville.

And he came back on Saturday to haunt the North Queenslanders in an inspired performance from fullback, bagging two tries and booting five goals.

It looked like it was going to be a long night for the Cowboys as he tore their defence to shreds, scoring two first-half tries and converting three to propel the Tigers to an early 22-0 lead.

But tries either side of halftime to North Queensland fullback Sam Bowie and sub Chris Reisen put the Cowboys back into the game with the scoreboard reading 22-12 after 42 minutes.

A superb backline movement started by Tigers halfback Wayne Dunley and finished by winger Coedi Towney threatened to bury the Cowboys' chances.

But Chippie Korostchuck crossed directly after and Reisen nabbed his double to set up a grandstand finish as North Queensland clawed back to within four points.

But they faded away again in the final 10 minutes with Wayne Dunley and Darren Nicholls and Mitchell Achurch all crossing for Wests to complete the rout.

The loss leaves the Cowboys anchored to the bottom of the ladder.

WESTS TIGERS 42 (Moltzen 2, Achurch 2, Siataga, Towney, Dunley, Nicholls tries; Moltzen 5 goals)
d NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS 22 (Reisen 2, Bowie, Korostchuck tries; Reisen 3 goals)
