Under-20s not fazed by Panthers' power

ANTONY STEWART

31May08

UNDER-20s centre Ben Lancini has warned the Panthers to underestimate the Cowboys at their peril ahead of tonight's National Youth Competition clash.

While North Queensland sit at the bottom of the NYC ladder, winless after 11 rounds, second-gamer Lancini said they would enter the game with an air of confidence.

Penrith are one of the favourites for the crown in the competition's inaugural season and sit second on the table behind St George Illawarra with seven wins from nine games.

Although the task ahead of North Queensland at Dairy Farmers Stadium tonight might seem close to impossible, Lancini said that was just the way the Cowboys liked it.

"In our games ... we seem to rise whenever it comes to the occasion where we are playing a big team," he said. "With our games against St George and Parramatta, those were the best games we played all year and they are both in the top eight."

That will certainly be food for thought for the Panthers.

The Cowboys were the first team to deny Parramatta victory when they held them to a 26-all draw in round four.

A week later, it was only a try and conversion on the siren that denied North Queensland victory against St George Illawarra when they went down 20-18.

They have also held another top-eight team, the New Zealand Warriors, to a draw.

Lancini, who has spent most of the season playing for Brothers in the Townsville and Districts Rugby League, said the Cowboys were capable of delivering Penrith a shock.

"Definitely, if we keep up our intensity I reckon we can do something," he said.

The 19-year-old, who tonight will start for the first time this season, said he was also looking forward to his individual battle with the monster-sized Panthers outside backs.

"They're a big team but I 'll just play the game as I usually do I guess, and it should be fun," Lancini said.

Kick-off is at 5.15pm.

Second Half Lapse

Going to the half time break with an 18-10 lead gave the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys U20 team hope of a first up victory, however a second half lapse in defence allowed Penrith to steal the match with 3 tries in 20 minutes.

Down 18-32 mid way through the second half, the Cowboys staged a late comeback to narrow the scores to 32-24 but ran out of time. Cowboys half back Brady Payne was constructive in attack while Penrith’s Lachlan Coote scored 20 of his side points with 3 tries and 4 goals.

Penrith 32 ( Lachlan Coote 3, William Isa, Wade Graham, Junior Tia Ihilifi tries, Lachlan Coote 4 goals )
d North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 24 ( Brady Payne, Nick Slyney, Jack Cooper, Obe Gaia tries, Nathan Barraclough 2 goals, Chris resin , Jack Cooper goals)

Cowboys injury crisis deepens

JOSH ALSTON
02Jun08

THE Cowboys' injury crisis in their under-20s ranks reached a new low on Saturday night after captain Ryan Carr was taken from the field with a serious shoulder injury in their 32-24 loss to Penrith.

The club is already missing a host of players, including halfback Ray Thompson, and will find out the extent of Carr's injury today.

"He was fairly sore this morning and we'll have to wait until the doctor has a look at him (today) to get a better idea," coach Grant Bell said.

"Once the doc's had a chance to have a look at it and some further investigations he'll let us know a bit more. At this stage he's just icing it and treating it."

The loss of Carr would be a devastating one for the Cowboys who have still yet to win a game in their debut season in the new competition.

The hooker has been consistently one of North Queensland's best players and his leadership will also be sorely missed if he is ruled out for any length of time.

"We're a bit concerned about how he was not finishing the game, (it) had a bit of an impact losing him," Bell said.

"He's quite an important player in our footy team.

"He's been important right through the year for us, he's been one of our better players.

"We'll see how he goes, sometimes these sort of injuries settle fairly quickly."

Penrith raced out to an early 10-point lead in the clash through tries to Lachlan Coote and Junior Tia-Kilifi in the opening 10 minutes.

But the Cowboys rebounded with tries to Brady Payne, Nick Slyney and Jack Cooper, which were all converted to give the home side an 18-14 halftime lead.

Coote eventually sunk the Cowboys as he completed his hat-trick with a brace of tries in the second half, while Obe Geia scored a late consolation try for North Queensland.
