Under-20s have nothing to lose

JOSH ALSTON

17May08

LADDER position will mean little for the Cowboys tonight when they line up against fellow National Youth Cup cellar-dwellers Manly.

North Queensland's under-20s are still searching for their first win of the season after falling just short against Cronulla last weekend.

And the Sea Eagles are equally desperate to put some points on the board after a lean run which has seen them win just two games in nine rounds of football.

Cowboys coach Grant Bell said both teams would be searching for consistency tonight in a competition in which only the top three sides have shown regular form.

"I think it is (a key game) but for us it's not a matter of where teams are necessarily on the ladder," Bell said.

"I think the competition is such that everybody has enjoyed their time up and their time back.

"So it's not something that anybody can be saying that they've been perfectly consistent other than that upper bracket.

"They (Manly) knocked the Bulldogs off in a good match, they (beat) Cronulla earlier in the year and they've been disappointing in games like the game against the Broncos.

"I think everybody has experienced a bit of that."

Centre Songhie Tatipata has been rewarded for a solid performance from the bench last week with a starting berth in tonight's game.

Brothers outside back Ben Lancini has also been called into the team but Blayne Harling will have to wait to make his comeback from a shoulder injury after being ruled out at the last minute.

Cowboys under-20s pipped – again

JOSH ALSTON

19May08

A SHATTERED North Queensland were denied their first win of the 2008 National Youth Competition in Gosford on Saturday night in devastating fashion.

The last versus second-last showdown saw both teams come into the clash desperate for the competition points, but it was Manly who snuck home 23-22 on the stroke of fulltime.

With the scores locked at 22-all in the final minutes of the game, Cowboys halfback Tom Humble missed two field goal attempts before conceding a penalty on the stroke of fulltime 45m out from his own line.

And with Manly lacking a genuine goalkicker, they elected to kick for touch, before firing the ball out to Mackay product Daly Cherry-Evans who calmly slotted the winning field goal to give Manly the victory.

The signs looked grim for North Queensland in the first half as Manly piled on three unanswered tries to streak out to an early 12-0 lead.

But the Cowboys rallied with fullback Sam Bowie and winger Chippie Korostchuck crossing for tries with the boot of Nathan Baraclough levelling the scores.

Well at least the halfback had a go,it takes a whole team to lose a game ! why point out one boys mistake.
