Cowboys under-20s unbowed
JOSH ALSTON
10May08
HEADS have not dipped at the Cowboys under-20s' training sessions this week despite coming off at the wrong end of a 40-10 national youth competition pasting last weekend.
Injuries to halfback Ray Thompson and centre Tyson Martin wrecked North Queensland's preparations leading into their clash with South Sydney last Sunday and it cost them dearly on the scoreboard.
Both players will again be missing with ankle injuries this week but coach Grant Bell said the players had responded well to the dual loss and were ready to line up against the Sharks this afternoon.
"I don't think it's affected them in how they're approaching the game at all," he said.
"At the time it certainly was disappointing but I'm constantly happy with how they approach the game and how they apply themselves to the game.
"They're really working hard and they're a good bunch of kids.
"Their training has just been terrific."
Home-ground advantage could play a big part for the winless Cowboys who have scraped together two draws at Dairy Farmers Stadium this season.
Bell said the players had trained well at their home base and were ready to push for their first win of the season.
"Coming back home allows you to prepare and do all your work in familiar circumstances," he said.
"Any player would say to you they would rather be at home and preparing at home."
The Sharks have also had an indifferent start to 2008 with just two wins and a draw from seven starts.
But Bell said that he had not looked at their form as a motivator for his struggling charges.
"At this stage we're focusing on our game," he said.
"It's a tough competition to win games for anybody, in any game, regardless of how your opponent has been going.
"We'll focus on getting things right and work on performing the best we can."

Narrow Loss to Sharks
The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys U20 sides put up a strong fight but were unable to win an arm wrestle of a match against the Cronulla Sharks.
Leading 10-8 at halftime, the Cowboys gave their fans plenty of hope of a first up win, but two quick tries to the Sharks after half time gave them the momentum and despite a late try, the Cowboys were unable close the gap.
Cronulla Sharks 21 ( Trent Grubb 2, Karl Filiga, Lancen Juodo tries, Nathan Stapleton 2 goals , Jarryd Hogan 1 field goal) defeated North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 14 ( Ryan Carr, Nick Slyney, Senghi Tatipata tries, Tom Humble 1 goal)

Under-20 Cowboys down again
JOSH ALSTON
12May08
THE under-20s Cowboys' National Youth Competition drought continues after they suffered another heartbreaking loss at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.
Cronulla proved to be the villains this time as a late field goal to Jarryd Hogan sealed the 21-14 win.
A rapid two-punch combination in the 13th minute had the home team in the box seat after Nick Slyney and former Cronulla junior Ryan Carr crossed to give the home team a 10-0 lead.
But tries either side of halftime to the Sharks' Karlos Filiga, Lancen Joudo and a double to second-rower Trent Grubb cruelled the Cowboys' chances.
"We got off to a good start and it probably kills us not capitalising on the start that you did make," Cowboys coach Grant Bell said.
"Going in at 10-all (at halftime) probably wasn't the scoreline we deserved."
Eleven Cowboys players are currently sidelined with injury but Bell was refusing to use the crisis as an excuse for his team's inability to win a game this season.
"As I said earlier in the week we (can't) use the injuries as a reason," he said.
"I was really pleased with a number of performances tonight, I thought Brandon Boor was very strong and I thought Sam Bowie at the back played well.
"As did our two halves, Tommy Humble really tried hard, he created a few things when he was on the footy and I thought Brady Payne worked really hard for us as well.
"We just need to be more complete, it sounds like a broken record, we keep saying that (but) it's something that we've got to get on top off."
