NORTH Queensland halfback Brett Firman is itching to have his first pre-season hit-out for a combined Cowboys-Young Guns side against a Broncos-Clydesdales outfit at Browne Park, Rockhampton on Saturday night.
Firman, who was thrown in at the deep end when he joined the Cowboys mid-way through last year, said he felt noticeably stronger in the gym after his first full off-season under conditioner Billy Johnstone.
"I'm really looking forward to this year. Last year was a tough season," Firman said.
"I'm looking forward to playing well and I'm going to work really hard."
Firman and utility Rod Jensen, who will play in the centres, are the only two members of last year's grand final side to contest the trial.
Firman will face off against talented 19-year-old Karmichael Hunt at the scrum-base after Broncos coach Wayne Bennett's decision to trial him in the chief playmaking role in a switch from his regular position at fullback.
Other high profile Broncos selected for the trial include flyer Leon Bott, new recruit Michael Ennis, Dane Carlaw and Neville Costigan.
Former Cowboys backrower Chris Muckert will also line-up for the Broncos.
COWBOYS/YOUNG GUNS: Brenton Bowen, Jason Barsley, Mark Henry, Rod Jensen, Neil Sweeney, Shane Muspratt, Brett Firman, Matt Scott, Clint Amos, Ray Cashmere, Carl Webb, Daniel Strickland, Jacob Lillyman. Interchange: Brent McConnell, Scott Smith, Gavin Cooper, Robert Tanielu, Russell Aitken. Coaches: Neil Henry/Grant Bell.
BRONCOS/CLYDESDALES: Darius Boyd, Leon Bott, Scott Minto, Steve Michaels, Tame Tupou, Greg Eastwood, Karmichael Hunt, Ben Hannant, Michael Ennis, Nick Kenny, Dane Carlaw, Chris Muckert, Neville Costigan.
