Under-20 Cowboys grab stunning draw
JOSH ALSTON
21Apr08
A STUNNING three-try fightback has seen the Cowboys under-20s record their second draw of the season with a 24-all stalemate against the Warriors at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday night.
North Queensland were gone for all money when they trailed 24-6 with 12 minutes left on the clock.
But a Brady Payne-inspired comeback saw the home side gun the Warriors down with a try to Josh Land in the final minute sealing the result.
The Cowboys have been the kings of close finishes in recent weeks after Parramatta scored in the final minute to level the scores two weeks ago and the Dragons pipped them in the dying stages last weekend to win 20-18.
"We like the close finishes in the last couple of minutes in a game of footy," coach Grant Bell said.
"I think the boys showed great composure, we were down 24-6 and the composure and the preparedness to get out and win the game or put themselves in that position was terrific.
"To come from there to finish 24-all was commendable for the guys.
"I think the guys thought `we're out here, let's give it the best shot we can'.
"They certainly got half a result anyway and that's all credit to them, the way they approached the back end of the game of footy."
The massive Warriors forwards were instrumental in building the platform for the Kiwis' lead, but it was five-eighth Payne who engineered the Cowboys' comeback.
He set up one try and had a hand in another with Ray Thompson and fullback Sam Bowie scoring the two tries in the leadup to the dramatic final minute.
"I think he had a very strong game, it was Brady's best game and he was well supported out there by a couple of the boys," Bell said.
"I thought Nick Slyney played very well, I thought Sam Bowie at the back played well again and I think it's obviously a job in progress and the guys are building combinations.
"They had a very physical side against them and defensively I think we came up with a lot of answers."
