Under-20 Cowboys down in a thriller

JOSH ALSTON

14Apr08

A WIN could be just around the corner for the North Queensland Cowboys under-20s after they were robbed of victory in the cruellest possible way in Wollongong on Saturday.

The Cowboys led 18-4 at halftime as they dominated the Dragons, running in four tries through Chris Faust, Brandon Boor, Ray Thompson and Obe Geia.

But they were forced to weather a mountain of attacking raids from St George Illawarra in the second half and it was five-eighth Nathan Dureau who broke their hearts with a 79th-minute try.

The loss comes on the back of their last-gasp draw with Parramatta last weekend when again the opposition scored in the dying seconds of the game.

Coach Grant Bell is remaining optimistic despite the fact the Cowboys are still winless in the fledgling competition and said there were positives to take out of the clash.

"It was disappointing in terms of not getting the points but there were some pleasing things to come out of the game for the guys," he said.

"We didn't get a lot of footy towards the end of the game, actually right through the second half, it was a telling tale how much defence we had to do in that second half.

"The sides in the last two weeks, Parramatta have only had a draw against us, other than that they've had an unblemished record and St George have only lost one.

"They're both pretty good football teams we've played in the last two weeks and we've certainly mixed it with them."

The lack of possession cost the Cowboys dearly as they were unable to post any further points due to costly errors and only converting one of their four tries proved costly as well.

"There was a lot of possession flow against us in the second half," Bell said.

"I think as a result it was maybe a combination of trying to defend a lead but probably I think it was probably more about just not enough possession and when we had it we tried to do a bit too much with it and turned it over a bit cheaply.

"We did a hell of a lot of defence in that second half and I thought the guys defended their tryline very bravely for a very long period."

The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys U20 suffered a heart breaking loss after leading St George –Illawarra for all but the final few minutes of the round 5 clash in Wollongong

Leading 18-4 at the break, the Cowboys were unable to maintain the dominance but still did enough to win with only a late try, reminiscent of Parramatta’s final minute try last week allowing St George-Illawarra side to get out of jail.

St George –Illawarra 20 (Dean Whare 3, Nathan Dureau tries, Martin Mundine 2 goals)
d North Queensland Toyota Cowboys 18 (Chris Faust, Brandon Boor, Obe Geia, Ray Thompson tries, Chris Reisen 1 goal)
