Young Cowboys take never-say-die approach

JOSH ALSTON

05Apr08

THE opening rounds of the National Youth Competition have been tough for the winless North Queensland Cowboys. And it could get tougher tonight when they take on the unbeaten Parramatta Eels.

But a spirited performance in their 32-10 loss to Brisbane has coach Grant Bell confident that their first win could be just around the corner.

"It's a tough start for the guys, it's certainly been an initiation of fire," he said.

"But from the view of how the guys have approached the games, it's been really pleasing. They're continuing to work very hard on what they're doing, they're certainly prepared to stand up and say we've got to do our very best out there."

North Queensland trailed just 12-6 in their last start before some poor options and ball control allowed the Broncos to push out to an insurmountable lead.

Bell said his young charges had learned some valuable lessons from that encounter.

"I was very pleased with the game against Brisbane," he said.

"(The players) were pleased with how we looked as a football team, the way we played it. I believe it was a game they could have won. There was a lot of disappointment about not winning a match they were convinced (in hindsight) they should have."

Adding extra spice to tonight's match will be the return of Townsville junior Anthony Mitchell who cut his teeth at Ignatius Park and Brothers.

The hooker has played for Queensland at both under-17 and under-19 level and was called up to the junior Kangaroos last year.

"He's a Townsville boy, a kid I know fairly well and he's a talented footballer," Bell said.

"It's obviously his first chance to come back home and play and show his wares – I'm certain he'll be out to do that.

"A number of the boys know Ant pretty well ... and he'll be coming home to put his best foot forward.

"But as far as the focus of the game, there's been no discussion from that point of view."

5 Apr 2008

The Cowboys Under 20's came within 40 seconds of securing their first Toyota Cup victory in the round 4 clash with Parramatta at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Leading 26-20 after fighting back from a 10-20 deficit, the Cowboys showed great courage and determination throughout the match but had to be content with a draw after Parramatta scored inside the last minute. Cowboys interchange player Tom Humble bought the crowd to their feet with a 70m intercept try with 8 minutes to go while the Cowboys forwards played strongly.

Cowboys 26 ( Ryan Carr, Nick Slyney, Ray Thompson, Shaun Maloney, Tom Humble tries, Steven Beaumont 2 goals, Tom Humble 1 goal ) drew Parramatta 26 ( Shaun Cox, Martin Lewis, Domenic Nasso, David Baumann, Luke Mottinelli tries, Tony Williams 3 goals)

Young Cowboys settle for 26-all draw

GOT HIM ... action from the Toyota Cup under-20s competition
on Saturday night

NORTH Queensland had a bittersweet night on Saturday night as they had victory snatched from them in the dying seconds by the undefeated Parramatta Eels in round four of the Toyota Cup.

The young Cowboys were forced to settle for a 26-all draw in a dramatic finish that saw Jonathan Mannah cross with just 50 seconds to go with Tony Williams converting to complete the stalemate. Minutes before Townsville product Tom Humble had snapped up an intercept to give the Cowboys a 26-20 lead.

But he was unsuccessful in converting his own try directly in front of the posts.

Parramatta hooker Anthony Mitchell – a former Townsville junior and friend of Humble's – was sympathetic towards his plight.

"I'm good mates with Tom, I played against him when he played for St Brendan's and that, he's a real classy player," he said.

"He come up to me after and just put his head into my shoulder and said he was filthy on himself.

"That's footy and stuff like that happens but I definitely won't take anything away from him, he played a great game."

Despite not coming away with both competition points, the draw was a watershed result for North Queensland who had been soundly beaten in their three previous encounters.

Coach Grant Bell was impressed with the performance of his young charges in taking it to the National Youth Competition's form team.

"We put two halves of footy together, last week we played really good in the first half and this week we put two ends of footy together and we gave one of the heavyweights in the comp a bit of a shake," he said.

"It ended up a draw, that's disappointing but I think the performance of the guys was really good out there.

"I think composure is something you learn with experience and the guys were pretty good by showing we've just got to keep hanging in and staying the fight.

"I think certainly there's a lot of positives to take out of the game but equally there's more things that we can sit back and say what have learned and how can we go a little bit better next time."
