Under-20s to get off bottom

ANTONY STEWART
28Mar08

THE Cowboys will be out to ensure they are not the ones that leave Suncorp Stadium tonight firmly planted to the bottom of the NRL Youth Competition ladder.

Both Brisbane and North Queensland are among four teams that have failed to register a win in the opening two rounds of the under-20 league.

The Broncos went down 28-24 to Penrith and 40-16 to the Sydney Roosters, while the Cowboys have been on the end of consecutive thrashings to Gold Coast and the Tigers. While admitting Brisbane would be no pushovers, Cowboys five-eighth Brady Payne said it was a great chance for the team to get off the mark.

"It is a good opportunity, but they are a very good football side, I think they have been unlucky both weeks not to come away with the result," he said.

"They are a very strong football team all across the park and we know that and we've come into the game prepared for that.

"But it is a good opportunity for us to try and get our first win of the year."

Payne, who is particularly looking forward to the halves battle with Broncos Jared Kahu and Ben Hunt, said morale was still good in the squad despite conceding 40-plus points in consecutive weeks.

"It is disappointing, but that is part of football and we'll be better the week after," said Payne, the younger brother of first-grade hooker Aaron.

"We have just got to put that behind us and really concentrate on the Broncos this week and really work hard on the little things in our game to make us a better team."

The Cowboys made three changes to the team that lost to the Tigers, with Tom Humble replacing Sam Bowie at fullback and Nathan Barraclough coming on to the bench. Chris Reisen is the travelling 18th man.
