Under-20 Cowboys learn lessons from first-round rout
ANTONY STEWART
22Mar08
THE Cowboys didn't plunge into panic mode after their disastrous start to the National Youth Competition but they will be desperate for improvement against the Tigers tonight.
North Queensland were given a harsh lesson in the realities of the new NRL under-20 league last week when they were hammered 46-10 by the Gold Coast.
Poor ball control and discipline proved costly as the Titans ended the game as a contest by the early stages of the second half.
And it will not get any easier tonight with the Wests Tigers heading to Dairy Farmers Stadium with a swagger in their step after a convincing opening-round win.
Coach Grant Bell said it was crucial the Cowboys bounced back strongly.
"I think we are just looking for improvement every week," he said.
"There are things we know we can do better and it's important we get those things right.
"Certainly our handling and defence around the rucks, which was on the back of handling, are important.
"We didn't complete enough sets of six to win a game of football and, as a result, fatigue built up and then you create more problems for yourself."
After a pre-season of positive results for the Cowboys, Bell conceded his players had now been given `a good idea of what was going on' in the new competition.
"The guys have got to be conscious of working on their skills around the game and in doing that they are going to improve and present a better game package," Bell said.
"It's a matter of us getting our little skills around the game right and if we do that we'll put ourselves in a position where we are close enough to have an effect on the game."
The Tigers were among the top performers in the first round, easily disposing of St George Illawarra 34-22 in Sydney.
"They played well last week. They are a good football team and they will certainly require us to be at our best," Bell said.
North Queensland have made four changes to the team that went down to the Titans.
Leo Faagutu (sprained ankle), Tom Humble, Nathan Barraclough and Chris Reisen have made way for James Munns, Robbie Congoo, Ben Spina and Daniel Vineula.
Joel Lillyman was named on an extended five-man bench.
"We're still looking at combinations and trying to ensure that we come up with the right mix ... to give us the best result," Bell said.
Kick-off is 6.20pm.

Throw Tom Humble in the halfback spot & Nathan Barraclough in at lock
and give them a chance in the first thirteen. humble may be small but he'll get the team going forward with nathan leading the pack.

I agree give them a chance , Humble may be small but he is fast and he is a go getter.
