Tough trial for young Cowboys

THE North Queensland Cowboys under-20 team face their toughest test of the pre-season when they meet reigning Townsville premiers Brothers tonight.

The match at Jack Manski Oval is the final hitout for the young Cowboys before the inaugural NRL under-20 competition starts next month.

Coach Grant Bell said his charges could expect a stern examination from a Brothers team he rated arguably the strongest in North Queensland.

"If Brothers aren't the best team at a club level in North Queensland, they're certainly up and around it," Bell said.

"We haven't picked a final best line-up, we've tried to pick a team that allows us to look at a number of different combinations."

Tom Humble, Steve Elliott, Ricky Griffiths, James Munns, Daniel Vineula, Blayne Harling and Chris Reisen will miss tonight's match as they have been named in a Cowboys reserves team to meet Mackay Cutters at Dairy Farmers Stadium tomorrow night.

The Cowboys under-20s played two trials last weekend, defeating Innisfail on Friday night before losing to Charters Towers on Sunday.

Bell said matches against senior opposition were proving valuable.

"For many of our guys it's their first chance to play senior football, to play against adults," Bell said.

"We've certainly learned a lot about our squad out of it."

Kick-off tonight is at 6.30.

Cowboys under-20 team: Sam Bowie, Steve Beaumont, Tyson Martin, Brandon Boor, Obe Geia, Brady Payne, Ray Thompson, Shaun Maloney, Ryan Carr, Josh Land, Leo Faagutu, Chris Faust, Nick Slyney. Interchange: Robbie Congoo, Casey Lillyman, Nathan Barraclough, Dane Hogan, Ben Spina.

The Cowboys Toyota Cup (under 20s) team will play TDRL premiers Brothers tonight in a trial game at Jack Manski Oval next to Brothers Leagues Club, Townsville. Kick-off will be at 6.30pm.

This is the last trial game for the Cowboys squad prior to team selection and the official start to the Toyota Cup competition on 14 March. The team will play in a national competition that will precede each Telstra Premiership game, with Fox Sports to broadcast an average of two matches per week.

Cowboys Toyota Cup Coach Grant Bell says that the squad has worked hard and embraced a new and demanding training regime.

“The players have come from varying platforms in their rugby league careers but have come together well,” says Bell. “Most of the team are from North Queensland and they are really excited about the prospect of representing the region and the Cowboys.”

The new Toyota Cup competition was launched by the NRL this week with significant support from officials, coaches and players who declared it one of the most important strategic initiatives since the formation of the National Rugby League.

Dual Dally M Medal winner Johnathan Thurston said the competition would benefit regional areas.

“The Toyota Cup will give young country players another pathway to the NRL,” Thurston said. “It also safeguards the future of these young guys by ensuring that there is life employment for them after football.

“I know how excited the fans are to have another Cowboys team to cheer for each week they come to watch us play.”’

The competition is billed as providing a blueprint on how to prepare players for the demands of professional sport and for life after football, and also gives fans the chance to watch the game’s next generation of players, coaches and referees hone their skills.
