MOVING UP ... Tom Humble, star of the Brothers side
in the Townsville premiership last year, lines up for
the Cowboys reserves tomorrow night. The reserves
face Mackay Cutters in a curtain-raiser to the NRL trial

COWBOYS under-20 playmaker Tom Humble is ready to go `back to school' at Dairy Farmers Stadium tomorrow night.

A star of the all-conquering Brothers team in last year's Townsville premiership, Humble will line up at five-eighth in the Cowboys reserves team to meet Queensland Cup outfit Mackay Cutters.

He is one of seven Cowboys under-20 players named for the curtain-raiser to the NRL trial between the Cowboys and Canberra.

Humble, 18, said the chance to play alongside players of the calibre of his halves partner Anthony Watts, Shane Tronc and David Faiumu would be a great learning experience.

"I'm mostly excited, looking forward to playing with the older blokes who have played a bit of first grade," Humble said.

"I've got a lot to learn off blokes like Anthony Watts and Shane Tronc.

"I learned a lot just from our first training session yesterday."

Humble enjoyed a dream 2007 season, captaining the Queensland Maroons under-19s and winning titles with
Brothers and the Townsville Foley Shield team.

The Central Queensland product has played mostly at halfback in recent seasons but did not see the switch to five-eighth as much of a problem.

"I've played halfback the last two years, but both positions are sort of the same role," Humble said.

"I played five-eighth in the trials last weekend, I think I should be right with it."

Humble is joined in tomorrow night's team by fellow under-20 players in fullback Steve Elliott, centre Ricky Griffiths and the interchange quartet of James Munns, Daniel Vineula, Blayne Harding and Chris Reisen.

The Cutters match will give the youngsters a chance to become better acquainted with their new home ground ahead of this year's inaugural NRL under-20 competition.

"It's exciting to be playing at Dairy Farmers, playing before the main game," Humble said.

"I played at Dairy Farmers once in a schoolboys game but this will be the first pretty serious game I've played there."

Humble is combining his rugby league career with an electrical apprenticeship arranged through the Cowboys.

Under-20 players at all clubs are required to work or study as well as play football.

"Most of the boys have got jobs," Humble said.

"A lot are doing apprenticeships and some have carried on with jobs they already had.

"It's pretty tough at times, especially towards the end of the week ... you're flat out from morning to night.

"But it's been a good change I think, I've really enjoyed all the training.

"I just can't wait till the season actually starts to see if all our training works and the boys can put it all together."
