Ex-Brahmans centre set for big things

22.02.2008

RUGBY LEAGUE: If his pre-season selections are anything to go by, former Whitsunday centre Tyson Martin is set for a big year in the under 20 North Queensland Cowboys Toyota Cup team. The 18-year-old was selected as part of a six-man bench for the Cowboys team which took on the Brisbane Broncos in an NRL trial game at Rockhampton on February 16.

Cowboys under 20 coach Grant Bell said Martin had "performed well" in the game against the Broncos.

"He's been training very well," Bell said.

"We're still learning about him as a player and he's still feeling his way here too, but physically he's doing well, hes growing as a player.

Bell said Martin had "put himself well and truly in the mix" for a starting position when the inaugural under 20 Toyota Cup season kicks off on March 15.

Martin has already been named as a run on centre for the combined Cowboys NRL/under 20 team which will play the Northern Pride in Cairns tomorrow. Before joining the Cowboys this season, Martin played for the Whitsunday Brahmans in Mackays Mercury Cup competition and has also been part of representative teams.
