Emerging Stars Rest Up
SHOULDER injuries have forced talented young forwards Shane Tronc (pictured) and Kris Kahler to withdraw from this weekend’s Emerging State of Origin camp.
Tronc (North Queensland) and Kahler (Canberra) will both be absent when the camp begins on Sunday in Brisbane, opting to instead continue their rehabilitation from offseason surgery.
This year’s camp includes just two teenagers – Karmichael Hunt and Greg Inglis – while Steve Bell (Manly) and Adam Mogg (Canberra) aren’t too far shy of their 30th birthdays.
In a testimony to the value of the Queensland Wizard Cup, only a handful of players in the Emerging squad are products of southern NRL development programs.
The likes of Bell, Mogg and Tronc in particular have been able to take advantage of NRL opportunities later in their careers thanks to the State League concept.
Nine NRL clubs are represented in the Emerging State of Origin group, with the number of talented playmakers a positive for the State after lean times at the turn of the millennium.
The Squad is as follows:
Steve Bell (Manly)
Neville Costigan (Brisbane)
Cooper Cronk (Melbourne)
Nathan Fien (New Zealand)
Craig Frawley (Canberra)
Justin Hodges (Brisbane)
Karmichael Hunt (Brisbane)
Greg Inglis (Melbourne)
Dallas Johnson (Melbourne)
Kris Kahler (Canberra) - withdrawn
Jaiman Lowe (Souths)
Adam Mogg (Canberra)
Nate Myles (Bulldogs)
Aaron Payne (North Queensland)
Brett Seymour (Brisbane)
Tim Smith (Parramatta)
David Stagg (Brisbane)
Sam Thaiday (Brisbane)
Shane Tronc (North Queensland) - withdrawn
