Drunk stars thrown out of club

By JAMES HOOPER

August 19, 2005

A DAY after defending premiers the Bulldogs suffered their worst defeat in 70 years, four of the club's major stars travelled to the Central Coast to help a battling local club raise funds.

As fans struggle to find reasons for the reigning champions' poor showing this season, three of the Bulldogs' biggest stars were thrown out of Central Coast Leagues Club for being too intoxicated.

What was supposed to be a good deed for the local community turned ugly when the three were ejected by security staff at the club's nightspot Club Troppo.

Doormen from the nightclub have confirmed they were forced to escort Bulldogs Willie Mason, Mark O'Meley and Luke Patten off the premises after the trio were deemed too intoxicated around 2am.

"They looked to be intoxicated when they arrived and then around the 2 o'clock mark they were asked to leave due to intoxication," the employee said.

Obviously they were escorted out a back way but O'Meley and Willie Mason started kicking up a bit of a stink about it.

"No punches or anything were thrown but they were very aggressive. Willie Mason did have it in for one of the security guards, virtually the first one that got to him."

An eyewitness last night told The Daily Telegraph Patten was so inebriated security staff had to assist him out and into a taxi.

The latest NRL binge-drinking revelation comes just two days after fellow Bulldogs star Sonny Bill Williams was caught drink-driving on his P-plates.

Bulldogs CEO Malcolm Noad was made aware of the Gosford incident last Monday but it is uncertain whether he took action.

Given the feud between The Daily Telegraph and the Bulldogs and the apparent lack of other media orginsations running with the this story, I'm just going to take this with a grain of salt for the moment :geek:.

Following is a comment from John Keene, General Manager, Central Coast Leagues Club and a letter from Jamie Goddard, one of the organisers of a fundraiser for the Terrigal Sharks Junior Rugby League Club.

I’ll let the facts speak for themselves regarding a story in The Daily Telegraph today about the Bulldogs.

Comment from John Keene, General Manager, Central Coast Leagues Club

In relation to an article appearing in the Daily Telegraph today alleging drunken Bulldog stars were thrown out of the Leagues Club, I pass on the following comments:

Firstly, the players did not turn up at the Club intoxicated. Our duty manger was at the entrance when they signed in and he detected no signs that the players were intoxicated.

Secondly, three of the Bulldogs biggest stars were not thrown out of the Central Coast Leagues Club for being too intoxicated.

Thirdly, Security at no time were forced to escort the players off the premises.

Lastly, when the players left the Club they exited via the main entrance, not “escorted out a back way.”

Bulldog players did come into the Leagues Club for a drink. During their time at the Leagues Club one player, not Mason or O'Meley, encroached on the Club's Responsible Service of Alcohol policy. As is common procedure, any patron identified as in breach of the Club's responsible service position will be asked to leave. If that patron is part of a group, the Club's standard practice is to request all members of the party to leave. I am pleased to say in this instance all members of the group complied with the Club's request and left without any fuss. The Leagues Club certainly had no issue with the players’ general behaviour during their time at the Central Coast Leagues Club.

It would appear from the article the Bulldogs players had come to the Central Coast to help raise funds for a struggling local junior rugby league club. They should be commended for their actions and we would welcome any players or members of the Bulldogs Club at the Central Coast Leagues Club in the future.

Regards

John Keene
