I'm bored so I thought I'd have a stab at the Queensland team before the season started. A few changes:

1. M. Bowen
2. T. Williams
3. W. Tonga
4. B. Tate
5. B. Slater
6. J. Thurston
7. S. Prince (c)
8. S. Price
9. C. Smith
10. B. Ross
11. M. Crocker
12. D. Johnson
13. P. Bowman

14. A. Harrison
15. C. Flannery
16. S. Berrigan
17. N. Myles

I think unless Darryn plays fullback then he shouldn't be in the side. I think Singy is getting a bit old for the job and is not as effective.

Don't think much of Billy Slater on the wing...he is a better fullback.

I agree with that. I would have him on the bench.

Got to have Carl Webb on the Interchange Bench instead of Ashley Harrison.

i think that team lacks a bit of size especially on da interchange bench, a prop like tronc or sumone for berrigan, and webb for tonga with bowman moving to centre, webb to second row and johnson to lock and its not a bad team

****e how can I forget Webby! My bad everyone I don't know why but I forgot him. Well I would probably **** Harrison to 18th man and put Webb on the bench.

I'd go

1. Matt Bowen
2. Ty Williams
3. Brent Tate
4. Paul Bowman
5. Matt Sing
6. Darren Lockyer
7. Johnathan Thurston
8. Steve Price
9. Cameron Smith
10. Petero Civonicva
11. David Stagg
12. Carl Webb
13. Tonie Carrol

14. Ben Ross
15. Neville Costigan
16. Brad Thorn
17. Shaun Berrigan

I think the 7 will go on form, as will the 1 (Bowen, Slater, Wesser and Shifcofske). If Sing is retired from rep footy than i would have Tonga on the wing pending form and i think Berrigan would be the best utility / backup. Am expecting a big big year from costigan this year

INCOMING Queensland State of Origin coach Mal Meninga will work off a fresh canvas as he looks to revitalise the fortunes of the XXXX Maroons.

Complementing a new Sunshine Coast base and a revamped management panel, Meninga has six potential Origin rookies in his squad for 2006.

Selectors Meninga, Des Morris, Gene Miles and Allan Smith this afternoon named 26 players for a pre-Origin series camp in Brisbane on March 1-2.

Players will be fitted for uniforms, be addressed on several issues and undergo assessment at the Queensland Academy of Sport.

Boom youngsters Tim Smith and Greg Inglis are among those joining 29-year-old veteran Steve Bell in chasing their first Maroon jerseys.

A changing of the guard in the forwards sees Nate Myles, Neville Costigan and Dallas Johnson as other hopeful debutants.

so they did name the 26 man team.

We've had 6 of our blokes named. not bad. shall be interesting though to see how these blokes perform in the opening few rounds and how much this lineup changes by origin time.

My team would get absolutely hammered I reckon... I'm probably missing a few people or something. Civoniceva was a deliberate obmission though. He's past it.

We've got a severe lack of depth in the 2nd row...

1. Matt Bowen
2. Ty Williams
3. Brent Tate
4. Willie Tonga
5. Billy Slater
6. Darren Lockyer (c)

I think Greg Ingliss is a "must" in the centres for the QLD side this year, the kid is outstanding. Ditch Potato Potato (Tate) or Berrigan and give the kid a go. Anyone see his try against the Warriors on the weekend?

I know it is early days but could we maybe see Payne get a crack this year. If he plays consistent, which he usually does, I hope he is in for a show, Smith is OK but I don't think he is any better than Aaron, I think he does play for 80 mins though doesn't he? Perhaps I am wearing my Cowboy Blinkers lol. Thoughts anyone?

Cam Smith lacks the speed of Payne. QLD should try to emulate the Cowboys style of play more this year.. instead of playing like the Broncos.

cameron smith is a great player. in my opinion though, regardless on what amount of time they play in regular season, i think that QLD should have both payne and smith and have them interchange - just as payney and faiumu do. it works great and provides us with the speed and playing style that would keep the blues on their toes ... or on their arses with any luck

Not bad Bernster, I would have Ingliss instead of Tate though and I would have to find room for Billy the Kid. I would like Tronc to display a little more mongrel before giving him an Origin Jersey though. I don't think I would have room for Chris Flannery in my side, he just bores me to tears for some reason. But your right, it's time to go........Darren Lockyer.

6. Thurston
7. Prince
8. Ross
9. Payne
10. Tronc

Ok, I'll have another go..

1. Darren Lockyer (c)
2. Ty Williams
3. Greg Inglis
4. Willie Tonga
5. Billy Slater
6. Johnathan Thurston
7. Scott Prince
8. Steve Price
9. Aaron Payne
10. Ben Ross
11. Neville Costigan (if he can get his head switched on he could be good.. hits hard, has mobility)
12. Michael Crocker
13. Paul Bowman

14. Matthew Bowen
15. Carl Webb
16. Shane Tronc
17. Nate Myles

Really ****es me off that a lot of the Cowboys forwards are from NSW... If Matt Scott can continue what he did on sunday, or even Lillyman.. you never know. I think QLD has to relive what they did in 2001 and bring in some new blood, if we're any chance of winning this series.

How is it that we Cowboy Fans seem to be the only ones that see Bear as a potentially great Lock? And your right Ianc, Steve Bell is knocking on the door as well. We seem to have an abundance of Centres at the moment that could step up.

Lockyer has run out of chances to prove he can deliver dominant performances at origin. His form in the last two seasons at origin and club level have been ordinary. Only one performance stands out and that was in trinations final vs poms.

Im sick of excuses being made for him like the amount of defensive work he has to do blunting his attack. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Thurston, Johns, Prince, Orford etc have to shoulder defensive workloads and still produce dominant performances.

The problem Lockyer has is he is a poor defender and a limited organiser and creater in attack.

Thurston is easily a better 5/8 than him and I was saying this last year not just jumping on the bandwagon after rd 1.

Thurston and Prince will make an excellent pairing.

Further problem for Lockyer is that he would no longer be as dynamic a fullback as Bowen Slater and a few other Qld candidiates I could think of.

While I sound very negative about him I do recognise he has been great and is still a fine footballer but the only position i see for him for qld would be as a supersub.

The fate of qld in 2006 rests with the selectors and whether they have the nuts to realise whats been written on the wall in big letters for some time.

Ps I would have Steve Price as captain and Prince as vc.
Although in the long term I think Thurston will reign for many years.

I'm changing mine

1. Matt Bowen
2. Shannon Hegarty
3. Justin Hodges
4. Paul Bowman
5. Matt Sing
6. Darren Lockyer
7. Johno Thurston
8. Steve Price
9. Cameron Smith
10. Shane Tronc
11. Mick Crocker
12. Carl Webb
13. Tonie Carrol

14. Ben Ross
15. Petero Civoniciva
16. Kirk Reynoldson
17. Shaun Berrigan - to be used as a lock and a back up half, hooker and centre

Now that ty is out picking that number 2 is sooo hard. I refuse to put Billy Slater there, i put hegarty there as a hope his form will improve now that he is fulltime winger at the rabbits. If he still sucks then Brent Tate or Willie Tonga to go on the wing.

1. Bowen
2. Slater
3. Inglis
4. Hodges
5. Sing
6. Lockyer
7. Thurston
8. Price
9. Payne
10. Tronc
11. Crocker
12. Johnson
13. Harrison

14. Webb
15. Scott
16. Bell
17. Lillyman

I think Scott is playing amazingly well and so is Lillyman and both deserve to be in the team. IMO Payne is playing rings around Smith and can work well with Thurston and Bowen. Lockyer will be in the team regardless.. I am reluctant about putting Slater on the wing - but he needs to be in the team. Inglis, Hodges and Bell are the form centres at the moment. I like the idea of Bowman as lock - but I think he needs to have time in that postion week to week... The back row is where our weakness is - and it is also where the NSW strength is - so this isn't good... But with Johns out - it should even things out a bit...

Thanks to a stomp on a Tigers player's head, Slater looks to be out until the first Origin game - it is very unlikely he will be picked for the first game.

The only person that could really challenge Bowen for the fullback jersey now, is one D. Lockyer.

tbh, I'd probably rather Lockyer in the halves than Prince and Smith. Prince has shown that he is nothing without Benji Marshall, and Smith is prone to making some errors in judgement and hasn't really excelled at all in big games.
