The Count - Anthony Minichiello
Minichiello the world's best!
Tuesday, November 22, 2005
Dynamic Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello confirmed what all Roosters fans already knew this morning in taking out the ‘Golden Boot’ award as the world’s best player.
The win capped a stellar year for the mistake-free custodian, who earlier in 2005 took out the best player award following NSW’s history-making Origin series win.
The selection of Minichiello goes some way towards erasing the farcical selection of ex-Great Britain skipper Andy Farrell last year, when most rugby league experts couldn’t find a spot for him in a list of their top 20 candidates.
And according to Minichiello’s team-mates at pre-season training this morning, the judges made the right decision.
“He deserves it,” Ryan Cross, who pipped Minichiello as the Roosters’ player of 2005, said.
“He’s had an outstanding year and just never seems to put a foot wrong.”
Amos Roberts added: “To be voted the best player in the world is huge for Mini – congratulations to him.”
Minichiello, 25, edged out England’s Stuart Fielden and Kiwi powerhouse Ruben Wiki to clinch the coveted award, which was presented by all-time Roosters great Arthur Beetson in Leeds.
Minichiello and fellow Tri Nations team-mates Craig Fitzgibbon and Adrian Morley will commence off-season training with the Roosters in mid-January, with Craig Wing to return to training in December after enjoying an extended break before his late Kangaroos call-up last week.
