Meninga named Maroons coach
October 13, 2005
MAL MENINGA has been appointed to coach Queensland in next year's State of Origin series.
The Queensland Rugby League offered Meninga – who played 32 Origins and scored a record 161 points – the job today.
He will replace Newcastle's Michael Hagan, who steps aside because of his commitments to the Knights.
Meninga's support staff – tipped to include sacked Bronco assistant Kevin Walters and former Origin favourite Trevor Gillmeister – will be named next month.

QLD need someone to bring the passion back into the jersey. I think only a former origin great could do that. I think it's a good decision.

Football is far too professional these days to rely purely on passion. You need some good football brains running the show to be successful these days.

It would have been wrong to have a Cockroach in charge of us. Mal is the right choice.

Mal may go alright as long as he has a good support cast under him. He has been out of top class coaching for a long time, so he would need people with current NRL experience. The days of QLD winning on passion are gone.

It's a bit of a worry especially if he appoints Gilly and Kevvie as well, great players, ordinary coaches.

Ifit was left up to Gilly they would turn up to the game still drunk. Gilly doesn't realize it is 2005. Football has changed since you played ol Gilly.
