Tiger fan's $1m poser
29sep05
IF YOU stood to win $1 million on a Sydney-Wests Tigers AFL-NRL premiership double, would you hedge your bet?
That's the delicious dilemma for one Swans and Tigers fanatic, who bet a total of $770 on the double in four different long-odds wagers with Centrebet and is now halfway towards securing the motza of all motzas.
He backed the double twice in the pre-season and twice at the huge odds of 2000-1 in April and June after both clubs had made indifferent starts.
The Tigers, who began the season second shortest in the wooden spoon market, are $1.70 favourites for Sunday night's NRL grand final against North Queensland Cowboys.
The Sydney punter is in the dream position where he could put $450,000 on the Cowboys at $2.20 with Centrebet and guarantee himself at least a $540,000 payout.
Yet Centrebet manager Gerard Daffy said yesterday the one-dimensional punter -- apparently he bets only on Swans-Tigers premiership doubles -- was considering risking the lot on a Tigers' triumph.
"To be honest, I think he might be going to sit back and let it ride," Daffy said. "I know what I'd be doing and I know what 99 per cent of the public would be doing. He's aware of his options and I think he's gone away to think about it.
"I can't believe he'd sit back and do nothing. I've been around a long time and there's nothing wrong with being in a win-win situation.
"Obviously when you're in that sort of situation, it can be difficult to get on (for a substantial bet on the Cowboys) and you've got to have the money."
Daffy said the lucky punter wasn't a serious backer, so he might well be in a mad scramble trying to rustle up the cash.
And would he want to put $450,000 on his beloved Tigers to lose? – AAP
