FOR THE third straight season the Queensland Wizard Cup will be contested by the same 11 clubs, bringing unprecedented stability to the competition.
Following a year in which the competition grew even further in terms of stature and support, the QRL Board met today and agreed not to alter the winning formula.
Although 2007 will be the 12th year of the Wizard Cup as a season-long competition, it will mark the very first time that the competing clubs have been maintained over a three-year period.
“In many respects the Queensland Wizard Cup is the envy of other intrastate competitions,” QRL Managing Director Ross Livermore said.
“While we continue to look forward, we recognise that the current participants have credibility, history and established links within their community.
“Each year since the inception of the Cup there have been lessons learned and a particularly pleasing aspect this year has been the professional manner in which clubs have conducted themselves.”
It was noted at today’s meeting that the difference between first and last place in season 2006 was less than at any other time in Wizard Cup history.
Last placed Ipswich won more games and had a better for-and-against than any other wooden spoon team previous to it, while the minor premiership and finals positions were not decided until the final round.
With five rounds remaining, all teams bar the Jets could have qualified for the finals.
